Red face What is your favorite sci-fi book?

I think that in the forum's description the word "books" should be added. They are entertainment, aren't they?

What is the best science fiction book you have ever read?
I personally love "The city and the stars" from A. Clarke. "Rendevouz with Rama" is also a nice one. But "The city and the stars" definitely made me dream of the future.

I started with the Lensman series by E.E. Doc Smith after being loaned one by a friend.

Frank Herberts Dune

Ursula K Leguin's Hainish Cycle (more political than scifi, but then so is Dune)

I have to pick just one?

The City, Not Long After: by Pat Murphy
Radix: by A.A. Attanasio
The Face on the Waters: by Robert Silverberg

For pulp style scifi I love the Bolo books.

I am gonna stop now.
Cthulhu for president. Why choose the lesser evil?

I could not pick just one book, but if it's allowed, I'd say the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Azimov.

I haven't read much sci-fi. I'd go with The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton as my favorite, if it counts.

"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick. The book the movie "Blade Runner" is based on.

Great book. If you liked the style, I'd recommend Old Man's War and Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi. I believe he's channeling Heinlein <g>.

Tough question... I'm going to name my favourite authors, and then my favourite of their books

Heinlein - Stranger in a Strange Land
Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game
Douglas Adams - the first Hitchhiker's book
Piers Anthony - the Apprentice Adept series (half fantasy, half sci-fi)
Spider Robinson - the Callaghan series
Frank Herbert - Dune (of course)
Arthur C. Clarke - Rendezvous with Rama/2001 (can't decide)
Ben Bova - I'll go with Mars

Of course, all the classics by Heinlein, Asimov, etc. But let's not forget Larry Niven and Orson Scott Card.

I agree - tough question. There have been so many. The ones that stand out are:

William's Gibson's "Neuromancer" trilogy (which consists of Neuromancer, Count Zero & Mona Lisa Overdrive).
Asimov: The Foundation Trilogy
Douglas Adams: Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (in 5 parts).
John Wyndham: The Crysalids

I'll put in another vote for Stranger, although Number of the Beast is a close second.

There are numerous other books I really like by many authors, but I'm sure there's some sort of post limit.

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
(The uncensored version from Doubleday)

Friday by Robert A. Heinlein

The two trilogies by William Gibson:
Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive and
Virtual Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow's Parties

Ender Saga by Orson Scott Card:
Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind

The Light of Other Days by Stephen Baxter and Arthur C. Clarke

The Greatwinter Trilogy by Sean McMullen:
Souls in the Great Machine, The Miocene Arrow, Eyes of the Calculor

I've read all of these several times and will continue to do so from time to time. If you're into Hard SF all of the above are a must.
