Default What happened to Pandora international?

This is probably old news, but still...

So I go to pandora as usual, in anticipation of getting things done with good music in the background.

Well, pandora is gone. Poof. For anyone outside the US, anyway. Does anyone know for sure WHY this happened? They say it's because of licensing issues, and that they will resume when license agreements have been made with the concerned countries. I'm therefore assuming it's the RIAA sticking their ugly faces into other people business? AGAIN? But I can't start my flame crusade before I'm sure.

anyone got better references?

I've read somewhere (sorry I can't remember where) that they've been told they have to block foreign IP addresses. I'm still getting it in the UK, but maybe they just haven't found my ISP's IP address yet. Or maybe it's because I lied about my postcode, and told them I lived at Wrigley Field, Chicago. (Well, it worked for the Blues Brothers).

Because I had a pandora account too they sent me an e-mail sometime ago that I am quoting below....
Maybe it has to do with what the e-mail says....

Quote:
Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,

I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: Savenetradio.org

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business potential.

I hope you'll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL make a difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential allies.

As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.

So it was the RIAA. B4strds.

Living outside of the US, I guess there isn't much point in signing up...

Makes you wonder why the RIAA suddenly people who distribute legally to pay more, rather than try harder to find the ones who don't. I guess the UserFriendly depiction of the RIAA is accurate after all.

I still have service but I signed up before they accepted international registrations. I just put in a US zip code. Try it. You may find it works.

Well, putting in a random zip doesn't seem to work any more. They are blocking based on IP addresses, now...

I don't see what the RIAA want in this. What's it going to help their case? They are fining the sites who do things legally, following all the retarded rules they set. What's this going to do? I for one am back to torrented music.

Proof that they do it all for the easy money.

I've used Launch (now yahoo music) for a few years now. As for this whole RIAA mess, I honestly have no good words to say about them. You used to be in music, then it was the music industry, now it's the music business. It's sad how they take it upon themselves to take these actions on "behalf" of the bands when the bands are mostly in the dark about all of this. I would never sign to a label affiliated with them (RIAA) and if a label I was on joined up, I would get out of there as quick as possible.
