| as a kind of follow-up to this thread : how do you picture our world in a hundred years? what will they think of us in the year 3000 ? what will they associate the period around 2000 with ? what will the kids learn about our period in school ? will they lump us together with the dark ages or with the renaissance ? |

| for me one event that will mark this period are 'our' first steps into space. other than that i'm a little bit more pessimistic ... i would be tempted to talk about human rights but that started a few centuries ago and they're not likely to be really universal for a few centuries. we still have wars, famine, slavery, genocide, dictatorships . another possibility is that this part of history will have been rewritten or completely erased ![]() |

| Discussion starter | Optimistically, we get through this whole global-warming and what-the-heck-do-we-do-with-technology, and we've colonized half the galaxy by 1000 years from now. More realistically, global warming will screw us all and we'll sink into a dark age. Else genetic engineering an biomechanical advancments will have turned us into a whole different sort of being. Makes me feel violated, like it's downright sacreligious, but we could easily take evolution into our own hands in not too long... SigmaX |

| A chain reaction of nukes occur, R.I.P Earth (xxxx~245x)... Those who will get to survive will live in a Dark Age again. Too bad I won't be there to see what happens :P Whatever happens, I am certain of one thing, something will go VERY wrong at some point, and society will collapse. Extreme Coder |

| Eligible for a custom title | I also think humans will wipe themselves out, but rather by something stupid than evil and destructive. Think Golgafrinchians and their demise by ridding their planet of phone sanitizers and then contracting a fatal disease. I think it'll take more than a thousand years though. More like 1500. As for the actual thread question Quote:
"They had more technology at the time than they knew what to do with. They then concentrated on entertainment technology. A few believed that the entire world were just as entitled to the use of these primitive 'personal computers' as those with toy gadgets. Some of these few became known as 'The Ubuntu.'" | |

| Level 37 Bureaucrat | It will go one of two ways... We'll be remembered either as the civilisation that invented the computer and aeroplanes, the first pionneers of space, we'll bring together the nations of the world in a gradual but effective harmony of globalised peace that lasts for another few thousand years, with our obvious little flaws that will be looked back upon and made joked about (like how the ancient Greeks had sex with young boys or how the Romans had funny names); we could be remembered as the civilisation that finally threw off the shackles of religion and started believing in reality. Or we will be remembered as the civilisation that invented the atomic bomb, pillaged the Earth's resources and destroyed the ozone layer, making planet Earth hostile and almost uninhabitable. We could be remembered as the civilisation that commited the worst ever acts against humanity such as the holocaust and the gulags. |

| If the Evolution Theory is correct(not that I believe in it), then it's possible the humans will evolve into something better. Maybe we will have our ears on top of our heads, and have one big eye?:P(not that making us like this will make us better) Extreme Coder |

| They will wonder how we managed without cybernetic enhancements and genetic engineering. It's only a matter of time before embedding technology in our bodies is commonplace. |

| I genuinely think it will be a lot like the way "history" museums portrayed our time in Futurama. EDIT: also, this is relevant to your interests: xkcd - A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language - By Randall Munroe |

| Eligible for a custom title | Quote: ![]() About evolving further: I don't think that will happen in only a thousand years' time. Humans have been the same for the past two thousand that we know of for certain. Likely longer than that, but I don't recall my history classes atm and I'm feeling too lazy to google. ![]() And now for something completely different... | "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein. In the Year 3000, they will learn that in the 20th and 21st century many millions of people died in unnecessary wars caused by Imperialism. They will wonder, "Why didn't they see how stupid it all was??" much like we think now about historic wars. Last edited by Liquid Punk : 05-16-2007 at 11:54 AM. |
