Default Vote Democrat

People in Democratic states should all vote for their democratic parties, in every election from yesterday onwards.

There's some really shitty democratic candidates out there.... I certainly wouldn't vote for them.

Why? Because there's a "D" in the name of the party? Shouldn't we be choosing our leaders based on other things, like maybe competence, or ideas, or character, or intelligence, or ...?

I'd personally love for both the "D" party and the "R" party to wither and die as quickly as possible. Neither is providing the ideas and choices we need.

Elections aren't football games where all that matters is that the side you're on wins. Sorry if it's harsh, but we have to grow up.

All of us in free and democratic nations must decide if democracy or imperialism we will go.

I agree... too many people have forgotten that we're all on the same team. We just have different opinions on who to elect captain, but regardless, we're still playing in the same game together.

Not that I'm American or anything, but my next general election vote will be going straight to the Conservative Party.

Mirroring my opinion of Gordon Brown (from the Labour Party; the UK equivalent of the Dems), I can't stand Obama, Clinton or Edwards.

I'd never have guessed you were a Tory Dave

I missed the big speach, as I was otherwise engaged (actually because I'm Irish I didn't give a damn). Was he any good?

Sorry if this is going off topic. I'll split the thread if anyone objects.

Big D democratic, as in any established party that calls itself Democratic, or party that is actually democratic, irrespective of self-labeling?

What team is that, the "Patriots"? If that is the case, say hello to your teammates the Russians from me.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is any thing wrong with taking a certain pride in your heritidge, as long as you don't let it get out of hand.

In my book: patriotism = imperialist nationalism = bad!

Seriously, when will the americans start to see the benefits of a pluralistic democracy...?

Sorry, just had to say it. You can start flaming me now.

Not sure where you picked up the word "patriotism" from this thread, but I agree with your point. Pure flag-waving patriotism scares the hell out of me. Patriots worship the false god of the flag and have too much pride in nation over everything else. It allows people to act without thinking.

We should work to make our country as pride-worthy as possible, but not assume it's perfect, just because it's ours.

Well obviously! It's not like me to make my political stances known, is it...?

The Conservative Party Conference was far better planned than Labour's. David Cameron was in his usual mode of listing absolutely everything wrong with the current Cabinet, and he made a lot of promises and addressed changes he will make as PM. No more ID card plans; tougher stances on crime; lower taxes, yet better spending on public services where necessary; the usual stuff. It apparently worked, as the Tories' opinion poll outcome now places the Tories ahead of Labour. It was thoroughly expected that Gordon Brown would call an Autumn general election, which would then guarantee him another four years in power, but he backed off after the Tories leaped ahead in the opinion polls. That really shows Brown's true intentions.

Another Labour government after the next general election would be disastrous.

It was fun listening to Brown try to explain to reporters why he had changed his mind about an Autumn General Election.

From an Irish point of view we had much better relationships with the recent Labour Government than their Tory predecessors. But who knows what a new day will bring

Waiting for them to wither and die is a dumb strategy. You're better off joining the one that most closely represents your views and working with other like minded people to change it from the inside.

You're right. I'm being overly cynical. On the other hand, why does our system tolerate only 2 major parties? I really would prefer healthy third and fourth alternatives, rather than forcing myself to pick between two corrupt and non-representative parties. We've formed parties before. If we're to be less cynical, how about applying that energy to creating vibrant alternatives, instead of trying to change something that is warped beyond belief?

What needs to change is the system, much more than the parties. A better political framework can promote parties and candidates that are more responsive to citizens.

I think they are all shitty lol, They never listen to what the people say anymore the USA has totally flipped upside down from what it was founded on. We now put up fences to keep out the people that created where we live today. We start wars over nothing because we think we are better then everyone else. The USA Dollar is at an all time low and getting lower and worst of all we are losing jobs to other country's and our debt just keeps spiraling down. The USA sadly will soon no longer be a super power if we keep this up.

Yup, that's why I think we need to change the system, rather than trying to fine-tune what we have.

@scooper, visitmaniak, anyone-interested:
Have you read this thread, or particularly my suggestion. I think the people nor the system are ready for more parties. Hence, a single party to change that, and rally the people to actively participate, inform themselves in less rusted to brokenness politics.

Then vote for the Republicans, they dont have the "D" . Seriously, if possible, i would vote for a third party, or blank. If not one of those, not; the you-have-to-vote stuff just sound like a meme usefull for the status quo to me.

I agree, but i see it as being in the same boat together, not patriotism. We do have to live together, and need 'captains'; we need (at least some) rules, policies.(Infact i didnt even see the patriotism interpretation until it was mentioned.)
I think patriotism, nationalism, and similars are dangerous and harmful.
