What are your thoughts on Scientology?

My first thoughts - hahahahaha! What a joke!

Then my remaining thoughts are, they are the rich and powerful, they are infiltrating many of the important organisations in our countries (the police, judicial system etc...). Maybe I should stop laughing and start fearing?

Spot-on. The only real difference between Scientology and Christianity is the age of the cults.

Ah, but that just depends on your definition of 'cult'. I think it goes:

1. Club
2. Cult
3. Religion

So, yeah religions are just very big cults... Regarding chrisitians, it depends what type you speak to. Some are completely closed to outside opinion but there are some who are open to some form of theological discussion and can back up their beliefs with more than just old books and tradition.

I neverput much thought in to Scientology don't care enough about it. But I think John T. is being silly. Any other time he would hide under a "freedom of speech" clause if someone didn't like what he said. Same as the Dixie Chicks. It's all fun and games until they come under fire.

My definition of cult is a group of people of whatever size, blindly following centuries old doctrines of a spurious being that doesn't exist.

I feel almist the same way just drop the centuries old part. Basicly anyone not thinking for them selves.

i find it bemusing that religious people attack scientology based on the fact that its ridiculous but refuse to cross examine their own religion from an outside prespective.

It's just another religion, nowhere near as rich & powerful as some others out there.

My question is why you guys are so easy to bash religions and say the are cults. Then aethists would be a cult because everybody doesn't believe in God or any other supreme being.

Some atheist think it impossible that other people believe in god while having thought about it critically perhaps. (I dont know if that is true.)

But the real reason i wanted to type here, is that i hate the existence of this thread. It mislabels scientology as religion/philosophy, while it should be in US politics or perhaps general.

Contrary to most of the others out there it seems to be a rising power, not a declining one. Combined with their reported, rumoured.. whatever methods I get a sensation of danger regarding this whole movement.

Scientology wants money, and they are getting loads of it because that is how their cult functions.

Thye supported the DMCA and use it frequently against Google Slashdot ( Scientologists Force Comment Off Slashdot, Yahoo, any critics of them.

BBC documentary on Scientology was turned into a stalkingfest by them (they hire private investigators for every critic and use the predicatable Scientologist policy of fair game to attack them). they threatened to sue (as they frequently do:

so they had to take all the interesting stuff, eg., Lisa McPherson, some interviews with celebs, out.

Hint: It didn't start out that way until Hubbard got smacked down for practicing medicine without a license. So they got a first amendment exception by classifying it as a religious experience and making millions off their victims through selling 'religious' texts and courses (like Hubbard's sci fi book)

Totally agree. That's why I'm trying to get as far away from religion discussions here as I can, but they're too attractive, and they're the main subjects dicussed at these forums now :/
