Cruise has hurt the image of Scientology, so now Travolta steps up to lead the way, so to speak. I watched most of that Panorama programme on the Beeb Monday night - it was interesting watching the BBC reporter lose it: the Scientology spokesperson never lost his cool, probably because he'd been in that exact situation many times before. I'd agree that most religions started out as cults - look at this kid in India or wherever that supposedly doesn't need to sleep or eat and is said to be the reincarnation of Buddha (or whoever). Scientology in a couple hundred years...I shudder to think of it.

| Scientology IS creepy... Any "group" that goes that far to ensure secrecy and gather intellegence is just plain creepy. Secrecy often reflects a need to hide something. Whether it be the ridiculous nature of their teachings or they don't teach those things at all and are really just a financial "frat" group, putting each other into positions around the world. Either way, creepy. Shouldn't beliefs be about believing rather than financial and social footing? Having to pay for your beliefs, buying enlightenment... Thats creepy and cult-like. The southpark episode on scientology was hilarious! (They had to put a little note on the screen when they were explaining the beliefs of scientology that said "This is what scientologists actually believe" because it's so fictitious and sci-fi-esque) |

| funnily enough, i found a clip from quite a few years ago where scientology tried the exact same stalk and intimidate tactics against another journalist, the only difference is the year. Journalists Broadcast - April 19, 1998 |

Atheists are equally guilty of this - if, and only if, they take the dogmatic approach and attempt to convert others to their belief system on the basis that "it is right/correct/etc". It would be nice if more people of all belief persuasions could discuss things without taking a "you should be like me" angle.
