Thumbs up Do you think Soulmates are a real "thing" or just a spin-off from religion?

Hi all

I do believe that we all do have a soul mate, a person "meant for us". Not just from a religious stand point, but from real life experience. Do you believe there exists such a thing as soul mates?

I don't think we have predetermined soul mates but I think friends and lovers can become soul mates.

Odds are there is one for everybody, but probably less than 5% actually find them.

The perfect person, in my opinion, has nothing to do with religion.

Based on the number of people who believe they have found their "soul mate", I don't believe that there is any one person meant for us all - the statistical likelihood of finding such a person is close to zero. The way I see it is everyone is compatible with everyone else to a certain degree, or "goodness of fit" if you will. Someone who you do not get along with at all might not "fit your curve" at all, whereas your "soul mate" would be a near perfect match, but there are probably many people that fit this criteria.

Now, if only there were an accurate chi-squared test for relationships...

Your suggesting a predetermined life. No, I can't believe that. What if my soul mate is in china and due to restrictions in that country she can never leave and I would never have a good enough reason to go there? That would mean I was merely played with by whomever predetermined this. That would be sad.

Nope.

It is a mystical concept aimed at replacing the idea you have to put effort into having a good relationship. There might be people who have a personality better suited for you than others, but that isn't what is meant when people talk about soul mates.

I'd like to add that the concept of soul mate does not fit my views on life. We evolve, we change, life is not a long and quiet river all the same from beginning to end. Soul may change as life goes by. Any thoughts on that ?

I certainly hope that there is no such thing as soulmate. With the drastic increase in world population through the last 100 years, it has become almost impossible to find him/her.

I agree! That is why the idea of predetermination is so unrealistic in my view. BTW--I liked analogy..

The analogy actually comes from a French saying, that was modified and used in a very famous and hilarious movie: La vie est un long fleuve tranquille.

Quotes from this movie actually made it into every day language ^^

This is a dumb argument. If life is predetermined, then the power who determines your soul-mate can easily determine that the two of you meet.

I don't hold with that opinion, but the argument is silly.

Sorry you didn't understand my meaning, bns. Perhaps I should have been more precise with my words. My answer was made in the context of which the question was asked, which is the present tense. Or did I misunderstand the question? Either way, I misjudged you. I thought you were above the kind of language you have displayed here, I guess not or, maybe your having a bad day.

What language?
'Dumb'?
'Silly'?
'Opinion'?

Not really, a relationship wouldn't be interesting if you and your mate are similar.

Not every day you see someone quote oneself, right? But I Do feel the need to explain some things further: When I said "not Just from a religious stand point" I meant that it's not from the point of any religion. To me religion is a personal matter between you and what ever your believes are, not in the sense of what church you acknowledge and attend.

That been said I do believe that we all have been here before. Not because some religion say so, but from common sense. Religions all say the same thing, they just use different words and different means to make you believe in their way of interpreting the writings. Religion has always been used to hold down the masses. Just my two cent any how.

Now - To me soul mates are NOT two persons completely alike. It's a person, or soul, that you've know for several life times. Not as your direct mirror. Not as a person who knows what you are thinking all the time.
Well - Three cents it came down to
To the world you are just someone - But to someone you ARE the world

Such a thing as a "soulmate" does exist, BUT:

There isn't just one person who is your soulmate. I'd imagine that everybody has a type of personality they get along with perfectly. There are many people in the world who have that exact personality that matches yours, and when you find one of those people, you view them as your "soulmate."

Well, that's in my experience, anyway. I could well be wrong!

Doesn't that contradict the 'soulmate' idea?

I use to believe there was a soul-mate for everyone, then realized that whether I find true happiness, comfort and peace with the person in my life is determined by me.
