Default Belgium prepares for attack

Quote:
BRUSSELS (AFP) — Belgian police on Friday boosted security in Brussels over fears of a possible Christmas attack after the arrest of 14 suspected Islamists, the interior ministry said.

The suspects were detained early Friday in a police raid following the discovery of plans to free an Al-Qaeda sympathiser from prison using weapons and explosives, justice officials said.

"An attack could be being prepared," Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt warned, citing "elements" of information gathered by a team set up to coordinate Belgium's security services.

Security was tightened "in busy public places", such as the capital's underground metro system, railway stations and the international airport, as well as at Christmas markets and in shopping districts.

Security often gives people the sense of safety but I've wondered how effective it is. Of course it is their job to secure where ever they were hired but it seems all too often that they react after something has happened, not before. It just makes me wonder how effective tightening security "in busy public places" will be.

Not sure what your issue is. You complain that they only react after the fact, then turn around and dispute the effectiveness of taking pre-emptive action.

Among other things, they could force the enemy to change or cancel their plans. It also puts people on the scene to contain anything that might happen. Or, it could just be a message to the islamicists that "we're on to you."

My issue is a simple one, I'm just wondering how effective security forces "in busy public places" are. I wasn't complaining about them reacting after the fact, was just merely stating an observation.

Those possibilities are true. I was just wondering.
