| Law can rule only to the extent that people believe in the law. Apart from that it has to be force (or more commonly, the threat of force, i.e. fear). Law is a charade, a figment of our imagination. But it's useful all the same, because it gives us a frame-work in which to live without resorting to force. But since it isn't an actual, tangible thing, it is only effective for those who wish to live in peace. Those who choose violence must be controlled with force or not at all. |
