Such a ban would be stupid, but I'll give them credit - at least they're trying to get what they see as a problem changed from their level rather than just suing for a bazillion dollars or calling on government to make laws.

Too bad it never occurred to them that its probably easier to get kids to stop sucking on pen caps than get the pen caps out of circulation.

I assumed it involved a lawsuit, until I RTFA. Refreshing that it didn't.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to try to get them to re-engineer the caps over time to account for this danger. But a quick and or complete ban seems ridiculous. It would be like banning corkscrews because some child corkscrewed himself by accident. There has to be some responsibility placed on parents, and some amount of danger in children's lives. Making all objects soft and lumpy, just in case a creative toddler finds a way to harm himself, doesn't work for society.

They're asking the companies to re-engineer the caps or do away with them. That's fine. They aren't trying to get the power of government on their side to do it - that's refreshing. I don't want to live in a world where no object exists that is small enough to choke on. BTW, this kid that choked was a teenager.

next time some kids stabs himself blind in the eye with a pen will they be calling for pens to be made totally out of foam? seriously when a teenager swallows and chokes on a pen lid, then i cant help but put my hands up and accept his stupidity was probably that great that he was gonna kill himself sooner or later, one way or another.

I can understand their zeal, but I think their quest for a ban is ill-conceived. It seems more like they can't let go. They should just grieve and then get on with life.

I thought all pen lids had holes in the end for this very reason, so if it gets stuck in a kids throat they can (theoretically) still breathe, an obvious example being the one latecomer posted above.
