Default $5000 per baby

Hillary Clinton announced the other day that she wants us to pay every person who pumps out a child on our soil $5000. That way, the new mother can stick it in some government approved investment, and have a nest egg built up when its dime to send the kid to college 18 years later.

People aren't biting. In a poll, the majority don't like the idea.

For those of you who think its a good idea for people who have babies to get $5000 of someone else's money free, you don't have to wait for the government to be the middle man. Go to the bank, take out $5000, and head for the nursery at the nearest hospital. As soon as you see them wheeling a new mother up to have one of her first looks at her new baby, lay the five grand on her and say "Thanks for having a kid."

When you're willing to do that yourself, I'm willing to listen to your reasons why you'd rather have the government arrange the drop off instead.

That's bullshit. If you're really concerned about kids going to college, then bolster the Pell grant system. Handing out cash money to new mothers is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad,<insert lots more>,bad, bad idea. And I'm a liberal. That's just a stupid idea.

Handing out money to others via the government -income redistribution- is always bad.

Our government brought this in a few years ago, started off at $3k and is now at $4k, going up to $5k next year.

Problem is, as you can guess, a lot of low socio economic women are having babies. Those on welfare having babies that will in turn stay on welfare... crap cycle.

In our case it only just pays for the birth and is in no way close to Paid Maternity/Paternity Leave. Or even better being a tax rebate so those who work and pay tax get money back and those that don't .. don't

Jeeezus, I hope you aren't saying its unfair that people who pay taxes and get part of their money back is unfair because people who don't work or pay taxes don't get money back? Please tell me I misunderstood you.

BTW, did you take me off ignore again? I hope you saw the nice things I said about you in the other thread.

Anyway, I just don't think having a baby is something other people with no choice in the matter should be responsible for. If you want $5000 when your baby is born, save it up before you get pregnant.

Stupid idea, i think it should be the other way around. For all the illegitimate kids and underage moms who cant keep their legs closed Lets place a $5000 fine on their ass instead . Give that money to poor college students like me instead.

dunno, here you get up to ~8000€ per year for every child you have.

It's kind of a no-no for a politician to propose getting rid of this. political and social suicide.

Europeans childbirth rate is on a steep decline from what I understand. You aren't having enough kids to produce revenue capable of keeping your socialist system afloat. They need to incentivize reproduction.

Idiocracy, here we come.
For just an instant, have a glimpse, a vision, of life through my eyes. It is a staggeringly joyous perspective, a view of how each person's choices can make their own life better. It is a vision of the possible, of how things can and should be.

hmm no, most parts of Europe have higher birth rates than the US, not comparable with Mexico or India, but still.

Lol, Idiocracy, nice movie

..!.._(·.·)_..!..

Our birthrates may be affected by the fact, that here not so much as in the US die.

European Birth Rate Declines, Population Growth In E.U. Has Flipped From Positive To Negative - CBS News

In effect, the authors say, the momentum for population growth in the 15-nation European Union has flipped from positive to negative and the trend could strongly influence population numbers throughout the 21st century.

Europe's working-age population is shrinking as fertility rates decline. In a fit of gloom, one German minister recently warned of the country "turning the light out" if its birth rate did not pick up.
BBC NEWS | Europe | German births decline to new low
Quote:
Germany has seen another decline in its birth rate, which is Europe's lowest.
Official figures show that the number of births fell by a further 2.8% last year. Meanwhile, the mortality rate rose by 1.5% compared with 2004. ...Economists say Europe's population decline threatens to damage economic growth for decades.
Europe, East and West, wrestles with falling birthrates - International Herald Tribune
Quote:
Birthrates have reached a historic and prolonged low in European countries, from Italy and Germany to Poland and the Czech Republic, straining pension plans and depleting the work force across the Continent.

The number of elderly already exceeds the number of young people in many countries, and the European Union's executive arm, alarmed by the trend, estimates that the bloc will have a shortfall of 20 million workers by 2030 if the low birthrates persist.

It's nice when children in your country pop out of everywhere, but they die, so they won't help you.

also, our economy works and surpassed yours.

My point is not that we have more babies than you, my point is that you aren't having enough to support your economy. The problem will probably spread over here too.

I'm sure I'll regret this when discussing other issues, but yet again, we have to stop applying values and degrees of goodness to certain lifestyles and states of being versus others. Procreation entitles you to no greater applause or money then non-procreating citizens. If it's not a crime you don't pay for it. If you're not a government employee you don't get paid for it.

One thing that has always pissed me off about the military, both before and after I was married, is that people who are married take home more money that someone single of the exact same rank and job.
