What they really want is to vote, have the veto stand, and be able to say "look at those bad Republicans - bad bad Bush."

The difference between me and you politically is a difference in philosophy. The problem with these politicians is old-fashioned greed. I wish I only disagreed with them on the issues. I can deal with someone thinking differently than me. But I have no use for the unblushing corruption that exists in Washington.

I've been to Tennessee, its true!

I just wanted to say, I've been reading all the postings on here for the past few minutes and I have an idea. Lets not tax cigarettes, lets tax booze. Poor, middle class and upper class all drink it, seems fair to me!

I'd say everybody in Washington drinks. They don't want to hit themselves with a big tax ... after all, they're looking for someone else to fund the silly thing.

If you want to tax everyone equally, tax water. Everyone needs it.

Good idea - kind of. Wouldnt work out totally equal though - those with a bit of cash could afford to install rain water tanks and avoid the tax to a significant degree - unless you also taxed rainwater tanks (which wouldn't be very wise if your water situation is similar to ours - shortages and widespread restrictions).

Yeah but if they tax cigarettes people might get smart and quit like they're advertising this bill will do in the first place. Then what?

Tax water. You don't fill swimming pools with water.
