| Thanks, fu, good video. I've known for the past 15 years or so flouride was dangerous, but I was not aware of the extent. I guess my question would be; Why are we living so dog-gone long? I don't get it. I'm 51 now and me and resczak are both dreading the idea of me living a long life. I've been thinking of ways to end it if and when it becomes necessary. But I think flouride is too slow. I've been drinking the water for most of that time. I guess it is mainly just screwing us up in the head. |

| Conspiracy theories regarding fluoride have been around since the '40s. The weirdest one I ever read about (from the '50s), was that fluoride in the drinking water would cause the masses not to see the aliens walking amongst us. A non-starter for me. ![]() |

I do think I've heard somewhere that since the advent of all this bottled water (now that's a thread on its own) cavities are on the increase because people get less fluoride than when they drank faucet water. We can save this thread. | |

| I've read that too about bottled water, and I would expect that there is truth there. My biggest concern with bottled water has been the recent revelation (read that "blinding flash of the obvious") on what the empty bottles are doing to the environment. A thousand years for plastic bags to break down, never for plastic bottles. When I travel (a lot), I drink out of fountains, and I try to use taps and ice in the hotels. We do not use plastic anything around here. As an alternative, we have an under sink water filter. We also take our own bags to the market, rather than use their paper or plastic bags. Any bottles we end up with, go in the recycle bin. Living in the country, every Saturday, I take all of the recycle stuff into town to a recycle center run by the city. Works good for us. ![]() Last edited by OrangeCrate : 07-11-2007 at 07:43 PM. Reason: typo |

I think you mean dihydrogen monoxide...and I mostly agree with your point. I will say that fluoride is toxic by itself, but much of what is said is silly, and I haven't seen any really good evidence of toxicity in the small concentrations we find in municipal water supplies. | I see the Fnords. | Why are we putting an industrial pollutant in our water supply? If I was caught putting it into a stream or river, I would be charged with a crime, yet when anyone points out that we're disposing of the alluminum industry's waste product by drinking it, they're ridiculed. Most of Western Europe has already stopped water flouridation, due to the health risks and questionable benifits. Doctors now recommend that baby formula be mixed with non-flouridated water because of the health risks. |

| There are a lot of studies out there on the effects of fluoride in drinking water. The key is that the concentrations are very very low - for the most part, studies have been inconclusive at best. Of course everything in high dose is bad for you, but at drinking water levels, I'm not convinced that fluoride is slowly killing me. That said, I'm not convinced that it's doing much either. I spent the first 18 years of my life drinking non-fluoridated well water, and I don't have any cavities. If we're sticking it on our teeth in toothpaste, why do we need it in the water too? |

| I'd be amazed if more than half the posters in this thread understood what fluoride is, and it's differentiation from fluorine. What Wikipedia says does not count as your own knowledge, by the way. I'm glad to see you do have the ability to repudiate yourself from at least some conspiracy theories. |

| Yes. It's present in tooth paste - mostly as sodium fluoride, and in comparatively high quantities too. Just imagine drinking several glasses of water being the same as brushing your teeth. It's not dangerous, and will protect your teeth, meaning a lower risk of needing a filling for example. |

| I see the Fnords. | It's marginally beneficial to dental health. The whole story of how that was discovered is very interesting. There was a town in Colorado, can't remember the name, who's spring was contaminated with Flouride. The people had all the classic symptoms that are now associated with Flouride poisoning, including dental flourosis. BigDave, where's the theory? Flouride is a toxic chemical. What's theoretical about that. I get so tired of seeing the phrase "conspiracy theory" being used as a derogative. |

| What most people assume is that there is floride in the water. Check again! Since Hurricane Katrina, there was a nationwide shortage. I think about 45% (IIRC) of the nation is/was without flouride. As for it being toxic ... anything is toxic if you consume too much. Even water will kill you. I've brushed my teeth and survived, so it can't be that harmful. |

| I see the Fnords. | Yes, thankfully water flouridation is on the decline, mostly due to the possible health concerns. And as for anything being toxic, that not a valid excuse for blatant disregard of public health. |

| Stirrer Of Shit | If its only "marginally beneficial" why is it used so widely in dental treatments and hygiene? Is it some big conpiracy ginned up by the Bush family and "Big Fluoride" to get rich off killing people slowly with fluoride? |
