Default Presidential vs Congressional Showdown....

White House rejects subpoenas - Politics - MSNBC.com

President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers' demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.

Hmmmm, this is a little scary.

This could have the (potentially) positive effect of getting the Supreme Court involved, which has consistently ruled against Mr. Bush's abuses.

I hope so, before it gets to the point to where we lose the ability to rule against him.

This is oddly reminiscent of the last Election. As I remember being told Congress was considering (with push from the President) on moving the election day ahead a number of weeks (to avoid possible threat via terrorists). This kind of vaccum it was then theorized could cause a hole that the Commander in Chief could advantage. Say if some terrorist act were to happen within it , Bush could theoretically call Martial Law, abolish the Congress, and become a dictator.

But now thats the stuff of conspiracy theorists dreams and unlikelyhood.

I see that as probable. Bush and Co. are setting it up meticulously, in fact. You basically have a Congress, for whatever reasons, collectively abdicating its oversight role. In that vacuum, Bush and Cheney (and the powers behind them) just continue to expand toward a functional dictatorship.
