Thumbs down Why post this?? Why are you here??

Now, I'm not trying to put any one down here, I really have to wonder, why start a thread like this: What do you think the best FPS of all time is?

??

I mean, seriously, why the hell do you give a crap about what other people's favourite First Person Shooter is? I don't care what other people's are. I don't even think I care what my own is. Games are games, why pick one? I mean, its not that I don't like fps, I do. I have been playing them as long as I can remember. Its just that, in reality, what does it matter to any one at all what other people classify as 'best'? To start with 'best' usually means 'favourite', which really has nothing to do with quality or any real merit at all, but simply personal preference. Preference often derived from a favourable experience, maybe your first exposure to the genera, or just happened to get it at the right time, or what ever. Maybe it was the only game you had for your only console, and you didn't have any other options, now you have a fondness for it. Its rarely even logical... Yea, some people (developers, maybe?) may pick 'best' based on technical merits or sales or some thing scientific, but the people who play it? I doubt it. People dont play for technical detail, they play for fun....

Further more, any one who likes some thing will defend it (if they are so inclined) with out any real reason. They might even have a legitimate argument. 'Oh it revolutionised the genera'. So what? How does that make it 'best'. Even if there is a real reasons, they don't really need one, its just convenient. A favourite is a favourite, even if it sucks. I think taking a logical standpoint on rating which form of standpoint gets the most merit would be just ironically silly, and would defeat the whole point of entertainment in the first place. Sure, magazines and websites rate games all the time, and even make a 'best games' list, based off of various factors, but these are merely guidelines on basic quality and over all production, not theological notations to be taken as your own personal guidelines. I read reviews and take them into consideration, but in the end, its about what I enjoy, not what a review says.

So, It begs the question, did the creator of this thread just make it to voice his thoughts, to seek out validation that his favorite FPS is indeed the best choice. Perhaps he seeks kinship in others with a similar taste in games. If that were the case, its seems that making a threat labeled "OMG *INSERT FPS* ROXORZ!!!1!!ONE!!!" Would make more sense....

So its not necessarily that I think having a favourite game with out a good reason is bad. In fact, I think that's terrific. Liking some thing just because you enjoy it is what gaming is all about. Its similar to art , in that you just do it because you do it. It like meditation.. or some thing along those lines.

Enough about games!!! That's not the point. The point is that threads like this are made all the time. "Whats the best Blah Blah?". "Who's the best Yackety Smackity?". Things like that. Then follows an often HUGE list of people just listing their favs. Who reads this shit??? Who? Seriously.... I know I don't read 40 pages of "Which Pokemon is bestest?".

Why make a thread about it? Why, why, why would you possibly give a shit what other people's favs are???

It gets me thinking back to another question I think about some times. What value to forums. I love forums, and spend a great deal of time browsing or posting. A few have greatmerits to them, wonderful discussions. The ubuntu forum is great. I've gotten tons of help off of it. There are a few others that are generally interesting, but there is still the trend such as this FPS board. Mounds and mounds of people not giving a shit about any real information, and just looking looking looking for their chance to get a word in. Yea, I'm putting my two sense in here... I guess I am an attention whore just like every one else, right? Or maybe there are some who actually care about real information... and its not even about that, its just about discussion. Talking about things that interest you. Degrassi.... for example... or anime, or making chicken soup, or what ever the fuck you like to do, its just about discussing it... As far as I can tell tho, this FPS type board are more common now. Its discouraging. Will my beloved forums all one day be like this???

Maybe I'm over thinking the whole thing. Maybe people really do give a damn about what other people's favourite fps is... I just don't get it...

It'd be nice if we could customize the "top five most recent" threads, so people who aren't interested in forum games could just ignore them altogether.

@ Erthian: So I guess what you want to discuss is "why do we post on forums at all". Otherwise you would have posted this in the thread you critisize.

The fact that you think this is trollish shows that you missed the point all together. Way to take a legitimate idea and pidgon hole it. I said more then once I wasn't trying to put any one down. Its really a simple question: why make a board like that? I was looking for some real ideas. Thanks for perpetuating juvenile behavior.

Its like if any one touches on an idea thats sensitive, then people just pass it off as trolling.

There's a category for forum games, like word association threads. There's a lot more posts in that category than there are in most of the others, so the latest 5 stats tend to include the forum games category. I was just saying that it would be nice to be able to choose to ignore certain categories in the top 5 list. For example, I'm not in the least interested in Degrassi, so I would choose to exclude that category from my personalized display.

I have no idea if VBulletin can do this or not, it was just a thought.

As I said, I'm NOT complaining. I'm honestly interested in why people make boards such as this. I guess with all my dramatics such as fearing the over run of forums with flamewars and stuff like that, my point got a bit convoluted, but my point was to get some legitimate input on this idea. This IS the Social Discussion board. I just kind guessed that people would want to discus society and its behavior.

Ohhh, yea. I see. You are right. It would be cool to have some more personal filtering options.

I think it can definitely be useful discussing why someone/I like something. There are reasons we like stuff, however trivial those might be. Understanding it helps understanding of one-self and of the appreciation of art/craftsmanship.
I am sure there are plenty of threads out there with idiot (fanboys) that only play the yes/no game on which games they like, but there is something to discuss about games and other forms of entertainment/art. And i am sure that those can ruin a good discussion about such things, but i guess you can try set the right example.

PS I do not get that people fail to see what he actually is asking. For me the answer seems obvious, but that does not mean i will not answer it. (plenty of stuff is obvious to others which i do not see too.)

Edit: Not a troll! See below, and this post!

People post because they want to. Some do it for fun, some to discuss serious stuff. To answer your question accurately would require omniscience, something none of us has.

Oh, and your tone is very direct, which could easily be taken as accusing, whether that is what you intend or not.

Some want to discuss society and its behavior. Some want to be a society and behave in sometimes serious, and sometimes silly ways. I really think that's all there is to it.

Sometimes I like to do things that are out of place and make everyone's day a little more surreal. Is that wrong??

I am not really sure what trolling is in the first place,
but I will answer the question for the OP:
I like reading the fora, because they give me new ideas. In real life I am usually talking to people, who are same minded as me, at least generally... I guess that comes from being a student. The only people who have significatly different lifes from me in real life are the shopowners I meet when buying groceries, or the police man, who stops me on the street or so. Usually only small talk is exchanged.

So I like reading views and ideas from people, who have a totally different background, whose views are sometimes new to me and often contrary to my opinions. I think this is good to keep your opinions from rusting and just staying as they are, only because they are never tried out or tested.

And I think if FPSs are important to you, than you also want to exchange opinions on them and broaden your horizons or so...

God damn, this thread is not trolling.
He actually tried to ask a question, and you are not reading things properly!
He did not say that he did not care for discussion in general, he seemed to be more aiming for if discussion of arts is interesting.
Even if he found it idiotic that people post here, maybe he thinks he is being nice to try convince us that we are wasting our time so we can be happier non-posting people.
BTW http://socialdiscussion.com/religion...t-threads.html might have some answers? Must have read it when it was active, but have not rechecked it for interesting parts.
