| Even though it's the 21st century, and some people beleive that racism is a thing of the past, I tend to disagree. In my opinion, it's everywhere. I don't understand how people can discriminate against other races. They seem to hate what they don't understand. I disagree with racism, but the other day I was listening to my grandmother, and she's against the multi-cultural society we have. I know she grew up in a time that supported racism, but I still disagree with it. That's my opinion on racism. If you disagree or have something to add to the topic, go right ahead. |

| Racism still lives. It's just more undercover than it was over 40 plus years ago. |

| Yes it still lives and I don't see it ever being a thing of the past. People will always hate people for the color of their skin/sex/religion and IMO, thats a pretty sad person. Who wants to go through life hating someone because they are different? |

| Just getting started | Yes of course it is. I just think its present in different ways now. Its less open segregation and stuff, like our society makes extra effort not to seem racist, like how black people have to be in every tv show...well its less seperating ourselves by race, but its more racial stereotypes. Like how if people were asked who they would most not want to sit by on a plane, they'd say arabs. Or who is most likely to smoke crack and be in a gang? Blacks. Who is most likely to be rich? Whites. Who is most likely to have an A+ in math? Asians. I don't know, maybe my thoughts are incorrect but that's just what I see. I also think slavery is still present. Though not as blacks serving whites. I think people are slaves to their lives. They are slaves to their jobs, to drugs, to their spouse, to the ideals and stereotypes (including racial stereotypes) that have them predispositioned to failure. Anyone care to agree or disagree? |

| Yes, I believe it's still here with us. It sucks and it makes me sick and I have no power to fight it. I'll just do my best to be a good person because I can't make those people change the way they think, but I hate it. |

| Interested participant | I believe that racism is definately still here 21st century or not. Not only different races, but also people with different sexual preferences get discriminated against, and even men and women get sexist comments. I doubt that will ever change. |

| Racism and prejudice of any kind are still present in our society, and most likely will always be. Whether or not we admit it, we all have prejudices and stereotypes against certain groups. Although we may not act on any of these prejudices, they are still there. All we can do is try our hardest to treat everybody equally. ![]() |

| Yeah, and it drives me nuts. most people won't come up to you and say racist things to your face, but they'll treat you differently, and that's just as bad. I'm african american and I have a couple of honors classes, and most of my classmates are white. I feel like everyone thinks I'm stupid and I don't belong there. we choose groups for projects, and they don't pick me because they think I'm just a slacker who doesn't know anything. It really frustrates me. |

| First of all I don't understand what is meant by 'our' society? The world is composed out of many societies I was lucky to have had the opportunity to live in many different countries and my feeling is that racism is present in every society . However in Western societies there is some kind of effort to fight it. I don't know how succesful it is , maybe it is driving a lot of it underground. I think the Western effort to fight racism took a turn for the worse when the Politiaclly Correct movement got big. People wasted lots of energy of trying to change speech paterns from ' black' to 'African American' ,thinking that they have solved the problem that way. |

| There is no question it exists. On top of that, it is very deeply rooted. The question americans are asking is 'why'. Is it our history or, are we perpetuating it by our constant reminders to ourselves. I think some believe we have an unconscious cultural need to hang on to it for political reasons as well as other purposes. That very well may be the case. I have never really thought so before exchangeing views with some on these forums. It certainly is a credible argument. |

| Interested participant | Blatant, individual racism has been all but eradicated in today's society. However, we now have colorblind racism to take its place. Materialists would argue that racism today relies on the system and its racist ideologists to exist, which I agree with. Based on past legacies, there is still a high degree of inequality between whites and minorities, even racism is supposedly gone. Colorblind racism is very dangerous, because it's not something easily noticed or thought about. And that's exactly how it survives. Unfortunately, racism is as old as human civilization itself, and it will die alongside it, as well. There were always be racism, only the form of it will change. Blatant racism has fallen out of favor since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, colorblind racism took its place. One day, this will fall out of favor and something new will come to power. The cycle will go on and on, it will never stop. |
