I really hope it's less of a physical "drop box" than a metaphorical one. It's hard to tell from the picture.

Regardless, I'm fully in favor of making it easier to give up kids for adoptions and adopt kids.

Yeah, I certainly hope it's not a real box. Now, although this might cut abortion, it also means more babies will have to get adopted. Are there enough people willing to adopt ?

I personally think it's a great idea. I'm not promoting dumping babies in drop boxes, but it's good to see they care about the future of Japan. I believe no kid should suffer by being dumped into the street like in L.A. or other big cities mothers drop their babies in dumpsters.

Thumbs up Re: Japan has drop box for unwanted babies

I agree that this is the way ahead. There are too many young ladies in the world who are afraid of what their parents might think and they hide their pregnancy, giving birth in bathrooms and dumping the child. Just an example, but it happens.
I know that when my youngest was born in California 5 years ago, they were starting something similar. Same goes nowadays here in North Carolina.
Thank God for progress.

I couldn't agree more.

It gives these children a chance to live rather than being found dead in a dumpster.

i believe something similar has been tested in some belgian city ... it could be that it's still going on ... i should check. if i remember correctly it's an unattended room in a hospital where you can leave the baby safely and anonymously.

i really don't think those 'drop boxes' will encourage more people to abandon their babies; just that those who were planning it will have a safer way to do so. so i don't have anything against it so far.

While I also agree that this is better than the streets or prom-night dumpsters, the best solution would not to have the baby in the first place. First of all, you don't have to have sex. Plenty of people get along fine without it. If you have to hide the pregnancy or are unable to provide for the child, use a contraceptive if you must have sex. If you can't, won't, or it fails, use a morning-after pill.

I can't help but think that this might encourage irresponsible behavior. Just a thought.

These boxes also exist in Germany. It's "illegal" to give away your child by using one of these boxes but there is neither investigation by the police nor a penality for the parents.

I like it better than abortion which is "illegal" in the same way as these boxes here.

Yes, I'm against abortion.

As I understand it, japan has an aging population, meaning there are fewer kids to provide for the future then there should be...

So by all means, put the kid in a box (preferably a metaphorical one) if the parents cant take care of it.

Just make DAMN sure there is plenty of opportunity to adopt the kids, and also make DAMN sure the orphanages are getting enough resources to care for these children until adoption.

I'd rather have people having abortions, drop-boxes seem like a bad idea to me. They should at least deliver them face to face. (but no questions asked)

Yeah, like i hid a large pillow under my sweater at the university one entire day. There is no hiding that.. those parents are either deluding themselves, idiots, or simply not there.

Meh, i'd rather have sex, why not? Contraceptives work, so seems crazy not to, if you have the chance.

Exactly the same way that legalization of aspirin has caused pandemic abuse. People are going to have sex either way.

I agree that contraception should be used. Now, about stupid parents: I'm sure we all understand biology here, but let's go over this one more time. People are all different. Some seriously fat chicks get pregnant. Guess what, sometimes they don't show 'cause they're so fat.
Next topic, skinny chicks: there have been incidents where they themselves remain undernourished and, consequently, the child doesn't grow as large as it should and the mother doesn't show.
Then there's every possible combination in between what with wearing baggier clothes, tighter clothes (think corset), and running away.

I'm kinda curious what makes the option of murdering an unborn child better than the option of giving it a chance at life.

Granted, but it is a 'personal affair', a fundamental right of the women to make a decision with her body, or it should be. I don't consider a wise idea for governments to penalize it because it is not of their business.
If we were talking of killing citizens I would agree but...we are not.
What is the case for the illegal ones who are killed in the US borders?

As long as they are not American citizens there is no much fuss, but what if they were American citizens? A war?

You can see a picture of the box at the hospital's website:

People get this idea from Germany's Babyklappe.

I don't see how an anonymous box has any advantage over just handing it to someone in person without having any questions asked. It just de-personalises the whole thing and could make people more likely to make the decision without thinking about it.
