I am an American patriot in the sense that I am proud of the ideas my country was founded on. I believe that it is my duty as a patriot to protect those ideas (freedom, liberty, etc.)

Nationalism in the sense of beliving that the people in your country are superior to other people simply because they are from your country is a very bad idea.

The very idea of being proud of being an american is just as dumb as being proud you're white, black, or whatever. You had no control over who your parents were or where they fucked.

(Aside: Really, being proud of a lot of these things people take pride in are just retarded. Gay pride? Okay, so you're just rubbing it into everyone's faces your personal business now that the law protects you. Seriously, STFU. If you people didn't parade around making it look like the limp-wristed S&M rainbow apocalypse was coming, I bet a lot fewer people would give a shit that you were gay.)

Oscar Wilde's quote "Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious" comes to mind.

Love your country, not your government.

Julius Caesar said beware of nationalism, it is a double edged sword.

Patriotism & Nationalism are the next most mind corrupting concepts after racism. No one chooses where they are born, just like no one chooses what skin color they are born with. To judge a person by his or her nationalism, is allowing yourself to think through the same mental process as racism.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

If you live in a crap hole country that doesn't protect people's rights, then no need for patriotism.

But the original question is kind of dumb anyway - patriotism is a response, its not something you just choose to be or not be.

You don't have to be a patriot to have an opinion on patriotism and its effects on the society you live in.

There's a difference in being proud of who you are and thinking everyone else is inferior.

Being a patriot means you want the best for your country, so if you live in a craphole country, then you would want to make it the best that it can be.
