However, atheists can't hold office in seven states. It's against their State Constitutions, in which case the State Constitutions violate Federal law. South Carolina actually enforces it, and in 1993 a professor at the College of Charleston was denied his application for notary public because he crossed out the word "god" in his oath. He sued the state, and in 1997 the state Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional. Arkansas: Article 19, Section 1: "No person who denies the being of a God shall hold any office in the civil departments of this State, nor be competent to testify as a witness in any court." Maryland: Declaration of Rights, Art. 36: "...nor shall any person, otherwise competent, be deemed incompetent as a witness, or juror, on account of his religious belief; provided, he believes in the existence of God..." Declaration of Rights, Art. 37: "That no religious test ought ever to be required as a qualification for any office of profit or trust in this State, other than a declaration of belief in the existence of God; nor shall the Legislature prescribe any other oath of office than the oath prescribed by this Constitution." North Carolina: Article 6, Section 8: "The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God." Pennsylvania: Article 1, Section 4: "No person who acknowledges the being of a God and a future state of rewards and punishments shall, on account of his religious sentiments, be disqualified to hold any office or place of trust or profit under this Commonwealth." South Carolina: Article 6, Section 4: "No person who denies the existence of the Supreme Being shall hold any office under this Constitution." Tennessee: Article 9, Section 2: "No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments, shall hold any office in the civil department of this State." Texas: Article 1, Section 4: "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office, or public trust, in this State; nor shall any one be excluded from holding office on account of his religious sentiments, provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being." Article 4, Section 2: "No person shall be eligible to the office of Governor who denies the existence of the Supreme Being...." Article 6, Section 2: "No person who denies the existence of the Supreme Being shall hold any office under this Constitution." | |

| I don't see how being black or asian or homosexual or having an abortion gives a person a good point of view. It doesn't matter a person's background. It just matters how they think and how open they are, how intelligent, how cunning, how reasonable. It's not going to happen, because no matter a politician's background, they all have to succumb to the strict adherence to dishonor that is required of any "successful" politician in America. The American government, even speaking only of the Constitution, cannot work on a large scale. The method was constructed under the assumption that the United States would remain small, not under the assumption that it would become an empire - which it essentially has. A deomcratic government; one based on the Lockean enlightenment belief that government is a contract between the governed and the governors [read John Locke's Two Treatises of Government] cannot exist in our current system. No matter who you try to put into office, it won't be very different. So ranting and raving about religion, ethnicity, and other arbitrary aspects of a person's character is childish. |
