What kinds of rap do you guys listen to? I normally just stick to old school hip-hop but I have been listening to the new Pastor Troy album at my internship with fontana. After hearing it day after day I finally decided to go out and pick Tool Muziq up. I think it is pretty dope. Check it out, and let me know what you guys think. www.myspace.com/pastortroy

I've tried listening to it, but I've failed to grasp an understanding of the genre so I don't know how to appreciate it. There are a handful of what I guess are considered rap songs that I think are well done and enjoyable, but the vast majority sounds like rubbish to my ears.

When I say I don't understand the genre, don't confuse that with not understanding the message. The message is usually loud and clear. What I mean is, that for me to appreciate a type of art, I have to be able to recognize the creativity and skill involved in creating it. I usually recognize neither in any form when I hear rap or hip hop music.

To a slightly lesser extent, the same goes for country music.

I listen to a little deathrap (ie - Necro, Ill Bill, and the sort) or some mainstream rap (ie - Eminem).

I don't know why, but I prefer white rappers.

For a long time, I didn't realize there was much difference between rap and hip-hop, but there is. Hip-hop is a lot funkier and "musical" in general, in my opinion.

actually rapping is what they are doing, they don't do hip-hoping.

Rap is a style of sprechgesang

And Hip-Hop is a genre of music for that matter.

One guy of linking park for example is rapping but that doesn't make their music hip-hop, vice versa there are sung parts in hip-hop songs.

You're right. I'm not sure how to define the difference between what I think of as hip hop, and rap. Maybe "old school hip hop" vs "gangsta rap"? For example, I can listen to the Roots, but not Eminem. Not sure what subcategories of hip hop they fall into though.

I agree. I have been listening to Robbie Robertsons 'Native American' music lately, which is similar but a little more complicated, I find it relaxing and soothing.

I don't really listen to much rap, but when I do I prefer the earlier rap from the early 90's and Tupac and Biggie.

Mostly it's artists like Dr. Dre, 213, Snoop, The Game and Ice Cube when it's in (any) english language.

Rappers from Denmark, well people like Per V., U$o, Marc Johnson And maybe a little UFO & Yepha when they're on the radio.

I only listen to the older stuff really from the 90s like someone else said, 2pac, biggie, dre etc.

I like a lot of rappers from England, I personally think thats were the best rap artists are at this moment in time, the mainstream rap scene from America seems to be degrading into the same song over and over again, I haven't heard much underground stuff from America so I suppose I cant really comment on that, but I strongly recommend you guys check out some UK rappers, to name a few:

D'arcangels
Akala <-- Make sure you listen to The Edge
Raw-T
Dizzee Rascal
Virus Syndicate

I actually don't listen to any of it by choice. I like my music to be, well, musical. Performed by musicians.

I'm old enough to remember when rap first 'arrived', and I was very actively political at the time. I really appreciated the innovation of Public Enemy, Run DMC for example. Grandmaster Flash, 'The Message' - that was classy stuff, and it was new. But now, 20 years or so later, rap/hiphop is so huge in pop culture that I too often hear it used as an excuse for people to call themselves musicians without actually having any musical talent whatsoever. I can appreciate the talent of a 'wordsmith' like Eminem, but still wouldn't call him a musician. It's poetry maybe, but it's not music in my book.
