| Level 37 Bureaucrat | You need something to keep you going, find something else to do with your time - like golfing or whatever. Make that what really motivates you to do stuff and the projects the worky thing you'd rather not do but force yourself to do. Also, this might just be me, but having a seperate computer/area for work and a seperate area for gaming and everything-else helps a great deal. Quote:

| Are you familiar with Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)? Try to become aware of your thoughts. Especially notice if you were feeling okay/not too bad, and then something happened and you started feeling unhappy. The idea is to then try to replay the barely conscious thoughts you had in response to the thing that happened, and see if they were really fair on you or were they very negative? Many of us have learnt negative thinking patterns and they become so ingrained in us that we automatically negatively evaluate every challenge that pops up, and often foresee loss, failure or misery for ourselves. These thoughts are totally unrealistic though, and it doesn't take long to see that when you start to consciously scrutinise them. Meditation can really help with giving you relief from psychological pain, and also helps you to become better at catching your thoughts. Also, if you haven't already, find something larger than yourself to be identified with. If you don't make progress soon, try to see a CBT therapist. They'll teach you practical techniques for changing negative thinking patterns and core beliefs about yourself. |

| Most people try to feel their way into better behavior. It doesn't work. Rather, behave your way into feeling better. What I mean is, do something productive. Whatever your routine is, change it. Get moving and doing. If you just have a case of the blues, then accomplishing something that you feel good about will almost always get you going again. On the other hand, if it's clinical depression (doesn't sound like it, but what do I know) then you should seek professional help. Some others have mentioned things that seem like good ideas: finish one project (I suggest a small one, and one that's kinda fun), exercise, whatever does it for you, but do something you're not doing now. | In case it wasn't apparent, sarcasm is yet another free service I offer. Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the social group without being willing to pay -- and claims a halo for his dishonesty.---- Robert A. Heinlein | |

| I would not rule out medication. If a person has a true chemical imbalance, medication is needed to correct this. However, I would try all other methods first. CBT is good as well as a healthy diet and exercise. I also recommend talking with friends, participating in leisure activities and developing a hobby. |

| hi, wow. you seem to be in a fix. i've personally tried music, taking a long walk (really helps), or meditation (yoga???). though, depression is a state of mind that you can get out of but it take lots of hard work. you could start with seeing only the best in you. do keep us informed of any progress though, please???? |

| Everyone gets depressed from time to time. I like to use those moments to create expressive artwork- it's theraputic. When I'm depressed I take time to think about how much worse things could be- then I remember how fortunate I am and how selfish I am being. |

| Exercise (Yoga, swimming and running are great), eat healthier (no junk food, less sugar), and get some vitamins (deficiency in vitamins like B12 can cause depression). Go outside more often. Talk to people more often. These methods can cure many cases of depression, even very severe ones (I speak from experience). If all else fails, there are medications and professional help. There is nothing wrong with the professional help method, but it can actually take longer to see real results, and it's easier for the problem to reappear. The natural method is cheaper, too. ![]() Last edited by Ilya : 05-27-2007 at 07:14 PM. |
