| fine helix and wofl.. i would like to know, the time needed (probably number of days) for a new egg to get ready for fertilization, after menstruation every month.. i'm getting the information from search engines, but its too biological to understand.. in brief, what is the time period after menstruation to have a safer intercourse.. |

| Just getting started | the highest probability of fertilization is between 9th and 20th day from after menstruation, supposing the cycle has 28 days. if it's longer/shorter, the range is longer/shorter as well. if the cycle is irregular, you can't count on that at all. the ovulation (release of an egg) usually occurs between 12nd and 15th day and it can be theoretically fertilized from this time till the end of the cycle. however, the sperms can survive a few days inside and wait for an egg to be released, and the 'older' egg is 'more difficult' to be fertilized -> therefore the range is like 9--20th day. |

I personally know at least 3 people who were born as a result of their parents using the "natural rhythm" method. Condoms suck, but unwanted pregnancies suck more.

| In Ireland the Rhythm method was commonly used thoughout the 60's and 70's as the Church made it clear it was the only method it allowed. The result of this was 50% of the population under 25 years of age in the 80's. The Rhythm method just does not work. |

Hope you don't mind the personal question, but what about your partner? Are they also taking some of the responsibility of avoiding any unexpected pregnancies? Or is it all up to you?

Another argument against the rhythm method: sex can be better for the girl when she's ovulating, because that's when her hormones are telling her she should be having sex. So, not only does it not work, it can end up not being as pleasurable.
