Out of curiosity's sake, I'm wondering what everyone would think about this..

I'm considering installing Zoints Local, it turns the bland member pages on the forum into something more social-network-like. It'll allow you to comment on other people's profile pages, put up an image, write a blog post, all the same stuff that most of those annoying, large social networking sites do.

More information about it is at the plugin page on vb.org:
Zoints LOCAL. Social networking, enhanced profiles, blogs and MUCH more - vBulletin.org Forum

Let me know what you think over the next few days or so, and we'll go from there.

Sounds cool to me.
For just an instant, have a glimpse, a vision, of life through my eyes. It is a staggeringly joyous perspective, a view of how each person's choices can make their own life better. It is a vision of the possible, of how things can and should be.

Already have a blog at ubuntero:Jasper :: Blog no entries yet, though. (And not sure what to write..)
I guess something similar here would be nice too.

I have concerns that it would lead to another vanity site, with lots of "look at me!" narcissism. If it can avoid that trap, then the extra features could be a boon.

I am not for it. I really don't think it is needed. Shouldn't we be putting ourselves forward in our posts, not making our me pages looking pretty and hope to rely on them to hold us up?

The forums would come first. The profiles would mostly just be an enhanced version of "the man (or woman) behind the post".

I think it's a great idea. 99% of user profiles are boring and bland, so anything to spruce them up is a bonus.

We tested Zoints on another very large un-named Vb forum ( ) for a while, and it was kind of neeto. It's like digg but for threads. It would bring more activity to these forums.

I still think we need to be careful about this. Is this a discussion site or a vanity site? Richer personal information is fine, as long as it doesn't become about creating a fictional character. I find the discussions interesting when I feel like it's with real people. If it starts feeling like I'm talking to caricatures of people it won't be such fun anymore.

Some may use the richer personal content as a way to share interesting details about themselves. Others (I think most) will use it for self-promotion. I don't see how the latter does anything but get in the way. I don't care how pretty or handsome or cool you are. I'm more interested in how you think, and what you can teach me.

That's Synergy. I won't be installing that until there's a LOT of changes made to the system.
