| Eligible for a custom title | I recently met a person in a gym dressed with an adidas tracksuit, listening to his iPod and complaining about not having enough money. Well, that made me think. I wonder what does "luxury" actually mean? Of course, defining a word like luxury depends on your status, on your origin, on what you've gone through in your life. But is there one single definition of luxury? If not, what is luxury to you? For me it's hard to say what luxury actually means to me. On the one hand I could name dozens of things that represent a certain social status like a big car, a house, cloth, jewellery and stuff like that. On the other hand I think of peace, freedom, a family and health. But does the definition of luxury only depend on what you have, compared to others? If so, compared to whom? To your rich neighbours or perhaps to people living in poverty, perhaps thousands of kilometres away? Living in Germany there is only a very little danger of living in poverty or dying from hunger. Nearly everyone in this country can afford to have a TV set, a phone, not to mention a secure home and food. But what about the internet? Although depending on social welfare there are possibilities of having access to the internet as it's a source of information and can help you to find a job. So, is internet still luxury in Germany? Some decades ago no-one even had a computer. I can't understand how something like the internet that became a standard so fast shouldn't still be seen as luxury. What do you think? |

| Buying the best and highest quality of every brand and thing, even if there was no need to do so ( highest speed internet, HDTV, Alienware laptops and PCs,etc..), anything that you can think of isn't out of reach, your home is almost the size of your school, A very expensive car with a built-in computer, etc... | Luxury means not having to consult the budget to see if I can afford it. Regardless of if it is just a $3 coffee or a $600 dining suite. |

| For me... it's not "having what you want", it's "wanting what you got". And I figure that by my standards my life is pretty luxurious. I have plenty of free-time to pursue my interests and hobbies, I don't often feel stressed at work, I make enough to pay the bills and put a little aside each month and I have people in my life that I really love. The only thing that would really make my life even more luxurious is if I never had to get up early in the morning. And a permanent vacation on a Caribbean cruise wouldn't hurt either. ![]() |

| I would define a luxury as something that is not a necessity, and is hard to obtain for the average person. Despite me and my girlfriend both earning considerably more than the average salary, I wouldn't say we live in luxury. I'd say we are merely comfortable, we eat out often, and don't think twice about going to the movies, or buying new clothes. But London is so expensive we share a place with another couple!!! |
