| Death is a natural part of life--we aren't eternal, even if we'd like to be (although personally, I don't). Personally, I think that people deserve to die with dignity. Granted, that doesn't apply to people who die in accidents, etc. Still, for natural deaths due to age or illness, people deserve to be allowed to die with dignity. I strongly support hospice services--once a person has decided to forgoe medical treatment, they should be allowed to die on their own terms, with the care needed to make them comfortable. I also support euthanasia, but I know that's a big hot button issue. My support of euthanasia only applies to people who are terminally ill, though--I don't think people should have free, open access to assisted suicide anytime they want...a lot of people with depression would take advantage of that without putting thought into things. I've actually put a good bit of thought into the issue of long-term life support. Simply stated, there is no way that I would want to be on life-support indefinitely--the time, stress, and financial demands it would place on my loved ones is too great. As far as I'm concerned, give me a few weeks and then let go (assuming there is minimal or no chance of recovery). Death is natural, and I think the taboos surrounding it only increase the suffering that the person and their families go through. We need to just let go of people when it is their time--not when we decide it's their time. Allow people to have dignity at the end of their life, and allow yourself to let go of them. It's the kindest thing you can do. |

| Wait a minute, I think I just answered a similar question in another thread... Anyway, I look forward to death at it's appropriate moment in my life. It's life's last great adventure, and I don't want to miss it. And frankly, I'd like to be staring at death straight in the face when it happens - I'd hate to die in my sleep. |
