Is there any way the limit could be raised to 100x100 or 25 kb?

I don't think it's too large - but at the same time not too small.

I second the request for 100x100 as that's a common avatar size on the internet and a lot of people have already sized images to match, and scaling at 90% ratio at that size tends to just make images look terrible as opposed to simply smaller.

indeed, all of my stored avatars are 100x100. I had to scale this one down, and it was already hard enough to see any level of detail.
