Default Best Linux games?

OK, what's on the top of your list. I'm talking about anything that runs reasonably well, by hook or crook in Linux.

Let's see, for me, there's:

MAME (xmame to be exact, with kxmame as the front end.) It will faithfully reproduce any arcade game who's ROM images you can steal...
Nethack's pretty cool
Nexiuz is a nifty FPS
There's the Quakes and Dooms, which have mostly been ported to Linux.
I just got Diablo II running in WINE.

The most addictive, most complex stragey, most easy-to-use controls, multiplayer FPS. The graphics aren't bad, either. It's the most fun, most addictive game ever! IMHO.

OK, so, moving on now...
  • Stepmania - wicked DDR game, plenty of songs online if you need any. (The website looks kinda hokey, but the game is really awesome!)
  • Globulation 2 - Beautiful civilization game, much like Age of Empires, except you manage your people much differently.
  • Scorched3D - Turn-based extremely graphical remake of Scorched Earth. I've never really liked turn-based games, but this one is really fun!
  • FreeCiv - Personally, I've never enjoyed this myself. It's got too much of a learning curve (which signals a great game) and I really don't have enough patience for it. I hear there's a beta out that looks and works a lot better then the existing stable version, however.
  • rRootage - Hardly known, but it's great for quick pickup games, unlike the ones I've mentioned so far. I love the music as well. It's a clone of something, but I can't think of what...

...and last but not least...

BZFLAG! (I did say it was addictive, didn't I?)

Nethack is seriously terrible. Highly addictive, but terrible. This is coming from someone who's actually ascended.

I'm not too big on games for Linux, i just boot to my illegitimately downloaded install of windows xp and play them

I gave Doom 3 a try though, amazing speed difference!

I really do not think there are any good games for linux....except maybe Nexuiz? Most proffesional free game I ever saw. Makes OpenArena look like amataur work.

If you are thinking there are no good games for Linux, then you should definately try the ones I mentioned in my post.

I have yet to find a game native to Linux worth the effort. I loved the comment about BZFlag having reasonable quality graphics, LOL.

I know there is more to gaming than looking good. The quality of the final result, both sound and graphics help with the immersive feel of the game.

I am however looking forward to Quake Wars, and that will run under Linux. If there will be a performance drop has yet to be seen.

The graphics aren't the focus of the game. They are good enough to make it feel right, but it isn't extremely detailed (though some maps are really wild). You've got to try it at least.

Actually, if the graphics were to be detailed and gory, I wouldn't be playing. I don't like to play games for the fun of the gore.

I have tried it, honest. Maybe I didn't give it enough time. As I said in my previous post there is more to gaming than graphics. Game play is the most important thing.
OMFG BZFlag! there is absolutely no excuse for graphics that bad! Games 20 years ago looked like that. I'm sure the games I played on my Atari ST looked nicer. OK I'm going off on one but Damn! that's bad...

What performance drop are you talking about?

That's a Windows only game.(atleast that's what I see from the site.

BTW about BZFlag, it's actually pretty good. It's playable on my sucky 10kb/s internet speed. Its graphics could definitely be upgraded, but they're OK with me.

The performance difference I'm taking about is between running the game on Windows or ubuntu.

If it runs fine then great I will be able to finally drop Windows all together and put ubuntu on my gaming rig. I will have to do lots of fiddling with stuff. I have yet to figure out how to have sound in a game as well as talking on TeamSpeak. The sound settings for running two independent sound programs is a little tricky. Nothing an afternoon on reading the forum can sort but it's still a bugger. It will be worth it just to get rid of WinXP

In Ubuntu, run "sudo apt-get install rrootage" and you tell me what happens.

The graphics are sadly outdated, but they work fine for the game, really. They actually make map-making a lot easier.

I gave Nexuiz a play a few weeks ago. I was impressed at how it worked and how well it did so. Only problem is that nowadays it's a bit like the first Unreal Tournament in terms of the technology.

I really don't know if free-open-source has what it takes to make today's top-of-the-range games. Isn't even Nexuiz (correct me if I'm wrong) based on the work of a commercial company (iD Software), the Quake engine?

Ah, stupid me :/ I thought that because there was no source on the site, it couldn't have been packaged somewhere else (and btw, where is its source?)

I don't know. I just, er, play it.

You could probably "apt-get source" if you have the source repositories enabled.
