| yeah, DVI actually gives you a digital signal, whereas VGA is still analog. It definetly can make a difference. It's like going from composite video to componet or HDMI on your HiDef TV. good move man |

| Discussion starter | I can't wait to make that shift myself. Unfortunately, I'm still in college so money is short. I bought two 17" VGA montiors my senior year of HS to go with my desktop to save money, but the next thing I buy for my computer will most likely be 2x 22" DVI widescreen monitors. I'm a junky for big displays, but I need dual screens until someone does fit to content on Linux. |

| I wish I got those kinds of results when I upgraded to DVI. I only noticed a marginal improvement ie. squint at the one that's on DVI and the other that's on VGA (same model) and they almost look identical... I was using a really nice VGA cable though... |

| That's sort of my experience - I went from a crappy old 1024x768 17" CRT on my old desktop machine to a new laptop with a 1440x900 14" LCD, and now every time I look at my old display, it's so blurry I wonder if I need glasses. |

| Well, I work a lot with older computers, so I mostly use VGA. I like it just because I have never tried anything better (can't really swap too much of that in a laptop...) I do have a DVI capable monitor (21'' 12*10k ) but I only use the vga connector... Isn't that evil :/ |

The longer the run, the more difference you'd see too. I need to use 25' cables since the monitor is a fair distance from the computer. | |

| Less than 3 miles from the sea | What is the resolution of HDMI? I know it's an improvement for TV but the screen on my phone would be an improvement on a standard TV... -------------------------------------------------------------------- OK I have found out for myself... I must remember to Wiki before making stupid posts... The answer is 2560x1600! Damn you are going to need some serous kit to push out that many pixels... imagine the hardware needed to run a 3D game at that rez. My nVidia 7900GT-OC can handle 1280x1024 running Battlefield:2 with all of the eye candy maxed out at around 60fps but give it a rez that high and I would be lucky to get 5!!! | Less than 3 miles from the sea | You ill need more than one. The number of pixels in a screen that size is huge. With 1280x1024 your graphics card has to put out 1,310,720 each frame. With HDMI you are talking about 4,096,000!!! Heck you would need a quad GPU setup to get close. Some serious CPU horse power to match and more Ram than you can poke a stick at. Ever wondered what you would do with an 8 core machine??? now you know! I think that running full a 3D games at HDMI is a little way off for your normal gamer. It will come, just as things always move forward but damn that would look nice ![]() If any of you guys haven't seen what type of games that are just about to come out, go to youtube and search for "Farcry" you will see what I mean. BXFlag it isn't!!! |
