| The big game companies are playing it safe. A full-featured game that has all the polish and effort expected so it can sit on the shelves at Best Buy or Gamespot costs millions, and takes dozens of programmers and dozens of artists to put together. Since the big companies are shelling out that much cash, they're not taking risks, so all we're seeing from them is sequels and games in known popular genres. Yet more racing games, John Madden Football XXXVIII, Quake 4, Doom 3, Starcraft 2, Final Fantasy 38, etc. If you want more originality, try surfing around for Flash games. They're smaller, not as flashy as console games, but virtually anyone who can find some development and artistic talent can come up with one - lots of them were made by one person, or a team of a few people. There you'll find the creative, fun stuff. |

I want to add though, that certain publishers or studios do the fun stuff though. I don't know which publishers exactly are they on PC(I didn't buy a PC game in a loooong time), but on consoles or handhelds, I'd try to go Nintendo ![]() Extreme Coder | |

| Commentator | Hm...*rubs eyes* Grammer is a good thing. Really. Everything has been done before and will be done again. Nothing it new. Saying that, you can improve upon an old formula. Look at FFXII. They changed everything on how battles work out, how stats and moves are learned, but they still kept it Final Fantasy. Look at Bioshock. Look at Spore. Look at the Half-Life series. Look at Supreme Commander. Look at DEFCON. All of the games said have taken something normal, something that has been done over, and recreated it to become something new. Something new, with some familiarity inside it. |

| Less than 3 miles from the sea | Thing is I'm not sure how much I want my games to be too different... There are several things I like in a game. These are features that I look for in new games. I like the game to be immersive, to look and sound as real as possible. There should be objectives, rather than a fragfest. It should be well balanced, a game of skill (The guy with the biggest gun shouldn't have all of the advantages) There should be new skills to learn and it should be a challenge (learning to fly in BF:2 was tough one). A team game where a group of people working together will overcome the lonewolf however good he is. Where good tack ticks and organisation can be developed to to make your team win over the other guys. Now this is what I want from a game, it's not going to be the same as everyone. Thing is there are enough people who would like what I have described to make the programmers come out with a whole host of games just like that. |

| i like games witch tell a story and you play between cutscenes. i like liniar gameplay with afew sidepaths. most inportently i like games witch are difarent, that do not use the mouse in the contral system, beeing deslexic i cannot cordinate both hands in 2 difarent places at the same time. keybord/gaimpad are fine for me. and i find it inposable to actualy enjoy a game anymore becose i can alwase spot errors, then i look foor more errors. bump mapping and lo poly just dosant work for me. all the costam made games usaly have verry lo poly modals, becose of poor game engines/ lack of modaling knolage. | Less than 3 miles from the sea | What I have described is for online gaming. A strong story line is very important for a single player game. Some of the best for this are the Call of Duty series. As for the coordination problem, one thing you can do with online FPS games is to just use the mouse. This is less strange that it sounds. A few years ago the clan I was in were playing Medal of Honour:Breakthrough. We were very competitive, and successful with it. All of the clan were in the top 100 players in the world. MrsMidlife (my cousin) was one of the better players. At one point she was ranked eleventh in the world. To most peoples amazement she never used any of the buttons on the keyboard while playing. Left button for forward, right for fire, scroll wheel for weapon seleccion. She never crouched, used lean or jump! but still Mrs was one of the best players in the world!!! Me, the best I could do was 16th. always beaten by my little cousin using just the bloody mouse... (World ranking from csports.net, there were about 650,000 regular players MoH:BT at that time) |

| i find it strange how few people have actualy played worrier within, it is defanatly the best in the corrent series. mutch better than two thrones. parsanly i find that old satern games are far more interesting/ chalanging to play than any new game. thay concentrate so mutch on the graphics, and completly disregard the story usaly. the only outher console ive got is the gba, witch the games are eather extremly short or completly inposable. the only gba game i engoyed was pokemon leaf green. witch i only started becose my brother was into it at the time. i can also say that the only cartoons ive been interested in are japanese, (bayblade/pokemon) i have never been able to complete the furst leavel on rasig type games!. |

| I'm going to assume you meant raising type games, but anyway; you should try out Pokemon Diamond/Pearl for the DS. Improved GFX, new story line, and new gimmicks. It should keep you interested for a while ![]() Extreme Coder |

| Commentator | The only exciting developers out there now are Valve and their implementation of Steam. I can't wait till more mods come out for Half-Life 2, Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. But I agree everything now bores me! Last edited by mand0 : 05-26-2007 at 01:09 PM. |

| Commentator | You mean exciting. Exiting means that the subject is in the process of leaving a place. e.g. "The only developers out there are exiting the fields of innovation." Yes there is a plethora of inane, tacked-together games out there. The trick is: do your research. IGN.com is a good one, especially for consoles. You DON'T want to be wasting NZ$100 on a game, unless it's gold. I'm waiting for Starcraft 2 (which looks like a 3d version of SC - exactly what I want!), Metroid Prime: Corruption and The next Resident Evil (Hooray for Wii!). I can't remember who said it above, but it was correct: they (the developers) don't have to reinvent the wheel, all they need to do is add a feature or two that makes their game more pleasurable. More pleasurable = more sales. More sales = more attempts to add more pleasurable features to the next slew of titles. Ad infinitum. "The evolution of the video game." |
