Default Complaint: moderator mmccarthy

FWIW, I would like to register a complaint about the moderator mmccarthy (mary). In my view, this moderator is being overly heavy-handed - seems to enjoy wielding power and doesn't understand the wisdom of letting discussions and disagreements run their natural course, within reasonable levels. There are some comments here about how this forum is dying, and I believe the behavior of this moderator is one cause of this. It is not enjoyable to participate on a forum that is excessively moderated. "Everything in moderation."

Myself and others have noted how this moderator moves and closes threads excessively (which creates confusion and often kills the conversation). I also just noticed an additional thread was closed, presumably because this moderator didn't like the content of the conversation, which remained on the general topic (steak eating).

I also received a warning that my content was some kind of an attack. In this case I can see how it could be interpreted that way, but I also don't believe we need to treated as little children - again that creates an atmosphere of censorship. Someone told me to "grow up" and I said in reply, 'in your own petty language, you grow up...' This moderator felt this was a personal attack on my part, which I consider a bit stretched. No one else had complained about my language, including the person I was speaking to, and I feel I made it clear that I was merely commenting on the name-calling nature of another post.

From there this moderated seemed to follow me looking to exert power, closing an unrelated thread, etc.

I suggest this moderator is detrimental to this forum and displays a bias based presumably on personal views of content, rather than being beneficial to the forum. Please reconsider using this person as a moderator.

Firstly Voice, I am not a moderator. I am site Administrator. There is a distinction.

Secondly, there are forum rules which were drawn up in consultation with regular members of this forum. You were issued a friendly warning which you have taken personally. That is unfortunate but not something I can do anything about.

I closed a thread that you had some responsibility in hijacking, regardless of whether you acknowledge this or not.

If you think making a complaint about me is going to get you banned so you can go around complaining to everyone how you were unfairly banned then forget it.

Banning will happen when you break the forum rules which you seem determined to do. That is your choice.

Nonsense.

Mary was completely correct to close my "how do you like your steak?" thread. You were resorting to immature, vituperative attacks simply because you find meat-eaters revolting. The thread would have degenerated into a flamewar, and if I was a moderator on this site (and I have plenty of moderator experience elsewhere), I would have locked it too.

Well, guess what, Voice. The world doesn't revolve around you. The sooner you realise that, the better.

Newsflash: Locking a thread is supposed to kill conversation.

That's odd. You forgot about the part where you told the particular member in question to "get a brain" and use it for something other than "ego stroking."

Of course, you'd never intentionally distort facts, would you?

I fully support Mary's tenure as an administrator of the site. Knowing when to lock a thread - and when you're completely out-of-line - is the sign of a good moderator, not a bad moderator.

Have a nice day.

In that case, it is clear why this forum is dying. I would say you are a poor administrator who lacks the wisdom to know when to leave things be, and that you allow your personal views to cloud your judgment. Find a hobby and enjoy it, and step in when there is a genuine need to do so.

But obviously my complaint wasn't addressed to you, and obviously you don't agree with it. Nuff said.

By the way, is telling someone to "shut the fuck up" against the rules? Just wondering. (And no, I am not implying that I am saying this to you - I am not. Another person on the forum used the phrase - to which you have not responded. I was just wondering why. Is it because it was said to me?)

If you check the thread again you will see it was responded to and no its not against the rules. There is a difference between a "personal attack" and telling someone to shut up.

I am not going to continue to banter in this thread. If you wish to be banned then fine, I'll oblige you. However, if you wish to remain posting on these forums then you will have to obey the rules.

Its really very simple.

I see you answered me here and then closed the thread...

What I have to say is simple.

How is "Shut the fuck up" a personal attack?
I did not say it was a personal attack. I said it was abusive. And I would say abusiveness of that nature is personal, and is an attack.

Some site administrator if you can't see how 'shut the fuck up' is abusive. Had I said that, you would have banned me, most likely. Obviously you have your friends here and protect them, regardless of how they break the rules.

Please answer my question... is it against the rules to tell someone to "shut the fuck up"? Well, site administrator?

Simply put, no it is not against the rules.

If you are that sensitive you probably shouldn't be posting on a forum of this nature.

LOL, is that supposed to bother me.

This is a simple situation and there is just one decision you have to make.

Do you wish to remain posting on these forums? If you do then you will need to obey the rules.

By your own admission, I have never broken a rule on this forum. So why do you keep repeating yourself, aside from the fact that you're dying to ban me so you can feel a power surge?

You are without a doubt one of the worst site administrators I have encountered, and I've encountered some real doozies. Obviously you just view it as a way to play at being 'the controller', instead of seeking to genuinely benefit the forum.

And you still haven't explained how discussing the dangers of eating steak doesn't belong in a thread about eating steak. That is ridiculous, and probably merely reflective of your personal views on the subject. More likely, you just followed me from the other thread to see how you could interfere with any conversations I was having elsewhere. Isn't that so?

This forum is decaying the way most forums do, and it usually revolves around "site administrators" who can't bear to have anyone discussing anything.

I don't see how one could be considered a personal attack without the other one being. Oh wait... Mary is the site administrator. Now I see.

I think you should shut the fuck up you crying baby.

I feel such a power surge at the moment. I am in control ........

Voice, since you have decided to personally attack me rather than answer the simple question you were asked you are now banned. Which was of course what you were angling for. I am happy to oblige.

Now where can I go to satisfy my power hungry urges, hmmm!

Isn't it normally just good manners to submit complaints by PM or email? Just sounds like someone is having a tantrum.

Hi everyone,

Now that that is over.

Do you think we should leave this thread here or delete it.

I would appreciate your opinions on the subject.
