| Eligible for a custom title | Yeah, buttering the bottom or both sides would get a bit messy. Although, when making a grilled cheese I butter both sides. But that's not toast, so it doesn't count. Even weirder question: do you butter from the outside edge in, or from the middle of the toast outwards? ![]() |

| Usually I don't which is the top or the bottom - you only find out when you pick it off the floor! (top side was down, right? ) Who can afford butter anyway? Marginal spreads, or buckwheat honey or jam.... |

| Level 37 Bureaucrat | Aren't both the sides of the toast the same?!?! Or is this some odd feature of American toast that one side is the 'top' and one is the 'bottom'? For me the side of the toast that i put the butter on immediately becomes the 'top' ![]() |

| Why would anyone butter the bottom and not the top? I can understand both, but it's like someone says "Would you like to be clean or messy" and you choose messy ![]() |

| Interested participant | I've never even thought of eating my toast butter side down. Really it doesn't matter a whole lot as long as my toast is nice and chewy. Buttering both sides might make it more chewy though, so I might try that some time. |
