Summary: This story takes place during the fifth season, shortly after they first start dating each other and Paige is just starting to understand how hard Alex’s life really is at home.

Chapter One

Paige looks over at Alex as she is getting nachos for a customer and sees that Alex has spaced out again. This is the fifth time that Alex has spaced out at work that night. Paige also notices the large sodas Alex is filling are starting to overflow. Paige takes the Pepsi, Mt. Dew, and diet Mt. Dew off the pop machine and puts lids on them, then hands them to the customers along with their nachos and popcorn. After she has taken care of the customers, she grabs a rag and wipes up the spilled pop.

Paige: Lexi honey, is there something wrong?

Alex just continues to stare into space and does not answer Paige back. Paige walks up to Alex. Paige then taps Alex on the shoulder to get her attention.

Paige: Earth to Lexi!
Alex: Did you say something, Paige?
Paige: Lexi honey, you having been spacing out all day is everything ok?
Alex: Yeah, I am tired is all. It has been a long day and Merri had me close last night.
Paige: Go take a break and get a cup of coffee. I’ll cover for you till you get back!
Alex: Thanks.

Paige kisses Alex on the lips, then waves at Alex as she walks out from behind the counter and starts walking toward the food court to buy a large coffee from the Starbucks. No sooner than Alex leaves, a rush of people comes up to the snack counter. Paige gets back to work taking orders just as Merri comes out from the back. She walks up to Paige with her hands on her hips.

Merri: Where is Alex?
Paige: She is on break, Merri.
Merri: Alex knows that she is supposed to wait till the rush slows down to take her break.
Paige: It was dead when she left for her break, Merri!
Merri: How long has she been gone?
Paige: She just left a minute ago. Give her a break, Merri, she is tired from closing up last night. You know that Sunday is a school night and that she has to get up early and go to school in the morning.
Merri: Fine. Just let her know that both of you are closing up tonight. I have to leave and pick my three-year-old daughter up from daycare. She is running a fever.
Paige: Ok.

Chapter Two

Paige and Alex do not get a break for the rest of their shifts. It seems like everyone came to the movies that night. By the time they closed up, Paige was really worried about Alex because she continues to keep space out. After they finish closing up and change out of their work uniforms, the two of them started walking toward the main entrance of the mall. Paige looks over at Alex who has her hands in her jean pockets.

Paige: Lexi, do you want my brother Dylan to give you a ride home?
Alex: No, I can walk home.
Paige: Lexi, its February and its pouring down rain outside.
Alex: I like the rain, Paige.
Paige: Its too cold! You’ll end up getting sick, baby!
Alex: I’ll be fine. The cold rain will wake me up, which is a good thing because I have a huge pile of homework to get done and I have to study for that Biology test we have tomorrow.
Paige: Lexi, come on. Let Dylan give you a ride home.
Alex: Paige, I’m going to walk home. I need some time to myself.
Paige: Fine, but call my cell phone when you get home to let me know you made it home safe.
Alex: Ok, honey.

Paige and Alex kiss each other good bye on the lips. Then Paige walks out to her brother’s car and Alex starts to walk home in the rain. Paige gets into the passenger seat and puts her seatbelt on. Dylan notices that Paige is watching Alex walk away with a worried look on her face.

Dylan: Paige, is something wrong?
Paige: I am worried about Alex. She kept spacing out at school and work today!
Dylan: Did you ask her about it, Sis?
Paige: Yeah, she said she was tired.
Dylan: Did she want a ride home?
Paige: No, she said she needed some time alone, but she agreed to call my cell phone and let me know she made it home safely.

Alex gets home and text messages’ Paige because she does not want to talk to anyone. It was bad enough that her mom was in the hospital and she had to come home to the apartment and spend a night alone with Chad. Alex goes right to her bedroom and changes into a pair of grey PJ bottoms and a grey night shirt. She falls asleep reading the novel for English class.

The next day at school, Paige is looking out of the M.I. lab door waiting for Alex to come to class, but she never shows up. Paige takes her cell phone out of her purse and dials Alex’s cellphone number.

Alex: Yo, what up?
Paige: Lexi, why are you not at school?
Alex: I’m opening up the movie theater today.
Paige: It’s a school day, Lexi!
Alex: I know that, but I need the money. Rent is due on Friday.
Paige: Your mom works too, Lexi. She can pay the rent.
Alex: No, she can’t, Paige!
Paige: Why not?
Alex: She is in the hospital.
Paige: What is wrong with Emily?
Alex: I can’t talk right now. I need to take a shower, then get read

Chapter Three
It’s now 2:40 P.M. and Alex is cleaning the tables by the snack counter off when Paige walks over to her. Both girls look at each other, then Paige takes the towel out of Alex’s hand and takes over cleaning the tables off . Alex heads behind the snack counter and refills the cheeses for the nachos. After she finishes filling up the chesses, she puts more popcorn kernels into the popcorn maker. During the time Alex was refilling the popcorn kernels, Paige refills the pop in the pop machine. They get everything refilled just in time for the after school movie rush to begin. As they are getting the customers what they ask for, Paige and Alex are talk to each other.

Alex: Paige, I thought you had Spirit Squad practice after school today?
Paige: No, we had practice before school because I was on the schedule to work today.
Alex: That’s right. I just forgot.
Paige: Lexi, what time are you getting off work tonight?
Alex: At closing time, why?
Paige: I just want to know, honey. You look and sound exhausted. If you want to leave early, I will cover for you, Lexi.
Alex: That is nice of you, but I need the money.
Paige: Lexi, you can only push yourself so hard before you have to take a break!
Alex: Paige, you do not understand what it is like for me having to deal with your mom’s drunk, live-in boyfriend who likes to beat people up when he has been drinking.
Paige: Is that why your mom in the hospital, Chad beat her up again?
Alex: (Yawns) No!
Paige: Go home and get some sleep, Lexi and tell me why your mom in the hospital?
Alex: I cannot go home. (Yawns) I have to pay the rent on Friday. (Yawns) And pay Emily’s hospital bills that are getting bigger each night she stays there. (Yawns) And Emily’s in the hospital because she fell down four flights of stairs to our apartment.
Paige: Lexi, you worked an extra shift already today. Working two more shifts today is not going to do you any good. Just go home at the end of this shift. I can close up by myself tonight.
Alex: (Getting popcorn for a customer) I cannot go home after this shift Paige. Chad is out of work again and my mom is not going to be (yawns) able to go back to work ‘til September 2006.
Paige: (Filling pops for a customer) Fine. At least let Dylan give you a ride home tonight.
Alex: Fine, That will be really nice. I will take you up on the ride tonight.

Alex pushes herself through work till Paige and she has close up the theater. Then Alex slowly walks out of the mall and to Dylan’s car with Paige. Paige has her left arm wrapped around Alex’s waist as they walk out of the mall. They get to Dylan’s car and Paige and Alex got into the back seat . They are holding eachother hands during the ride to Alex’s apartment building. Alex is resting her head on Paige shoulder. Dylan, Paige, and Alex are talk to eachother on the way to Alex’s place.

Dylan: Nice to see you again, Alex. How are you doing?
Alex: I’m doing well.
Paige: You missed the Biology test today during fifth period. That is really going to lower your grade.
Alex: I’m taking a make up test tomorrow.
Paige: How? Mrs. Hatzilakos does not let people make up tests if they skip school to work an extra shift.
Alex: Chad called the school and told them I was sick.
Paige: He did something good for once.
Alex: Yeah, he did. Paige, thanks for bringing me the schoolwork I missed today.
Paige: It was no big deal, Lexi. I bring all my friends their schoolwork when they miss school.
Alex: I can’t believe it’s raining again today.
Paige: I know. It’s the fourth day in a row that it’s raining.

Dylan pulls into the parking lot of Alex’s apartment building and pulls into a parking spot by the door, then puts his car in park. Alex kisses Paige goodbye on the forehead and Paige kisses her goodbye back. Alex then gets out of Dylan’s car and heads into the building and up the stairs to the fourth floor. Once inside the apartment, Alex goes and takes a steaming hot shower, then changes into her PJ’s and goes into her bedroom and goes to bed. She falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillows.

Meanwhile, at Paige parents house, Paige is working on her homework for math class, but is having a hard time staying away. She was up all night the yesterday, night worrying about Alex.

Chapter Four

Alex got up on Wednesday morning, she throws on a pair of jeans and a black tank top. She then grabs a long-sleeve black jacket and puts it on. Alex goes into the bathroom and finishes getting ready for school. She starts walking towards the door when Chad looks up at her. He then stands up and walk in front of Alex so she can’t get out the door.

Alex: Chad, I need to leave for school now!
Chad: Lexi, you should eat breakfast before going to school.
Alex: I don’t have an appetite this morning.
Chad: Are you up to going to school today, Lexi? I could call the school and tell them you’re sick again.
Alex: No, I need to go. I have to take a make up Biology tests during fifth period.
Chad: I am worried about you, Lexi. You do not have an appetite, you took a two-hour steaming hot shower when you got home from work last night, then crashed till your alarm clock went off this morning. Now you are shivering, Lexi.
Alex: I’m fine, Chad.
Chad: Ok, but if you change your mind and want to come home from school sick, just go to the nurse and have her call me and I’ll come pick you up.
Alex: Ok.

Chad steps away from the door and lets Alex leave the apartment and head to school. When she gets to school, Alex sets down at one of the picnic tables outside of Degrassi and puts her head down on the table. After a few minutes, Marco, Ellie, and Jimmy come over and join Alex at the picnic table. Marco sits down on Alex’s right side, Jimmy wheels up to the end of the table, and Ellie takes a seat across from her.

Marco: I think Lexi sleeping.
Jimmy and Ellie: Yeah.
Marco: (Lightly shakes Alex) Lexi, you need to wake up!

Alex lifts her head up and starts rubbing her eyes. She then looks at Marco, Jimmy, and Ellie before lying her head back down on the table and closing her eyes again. Marco, Jimmy, and Ellie look at eachother and roll their eyes at eachother.

Marco: Lexi, is everything ok?
Alex: Yeah, I’m fine. I’m tired is all.
Ellie: Lexi are sure, because you missed school yesterday?
Alex: (Looks around before talking) I overslept, so Chad just called the school and told them I was sick.
Marco, Jimmy, and Ellie: Oh!
Alex: How long do we have until first period?
Marco: Ten minutes, Lexi.
Alex: Thanks, can you wake me up when the bell rings?

Just then, both Paige and Hazel walk up to the picnic table. Hazel sits down next to Ellie at the picnic table. Paige comes up behind Alex and wraps her arms around Alex and kisses the top of Alex’s head. Alex pulls her girlfriend onto her lap, then kisses her on the top of the head.

Chapter Five

Hazel sets down the coffee holder, which has the large coffees for Marco, Paige, Jimmy, Ellie, Alex’s and her down on the picnic table. She also set the take-out bag that has blueberry muffins in it for everyone down on the table. She hands everyone their large coffee and then gives them their muffin.

Marco: Thanks Paige, Hazel for the coffee and muffin. I’ll buy them tomorrow morning.
Ellie, Jimmy, and Alex: Yeah, thanks.

They all start eating their muffins, except for Alex who is just drinking her coffee and picking at her muffin, but not really eating it. Paige looks at Alex with a concerned look on her face, but Alex is paying no attention to anyone. She just continues to pick at her muffin and sip her coffee.

Paige: Lexi, aren’t you going to eat your muffin?
Alex: I don’t have an appetite today.
Ellie: Lexi, are you sure you’re not getting sick?
Alex: I am not getting sick, Ellie. Just leave me alone.

With that, Alex stands up and throws the muffin into the trash can and continues to sip her coffee as she walks into the school and heads to her locker. Paige gets up and follows her girlfriend into the school and to her locker. Paige stops next to Alex and puts her hand on Alex’s shoulder because Alex is staring into her open locker with both her hands over her face crying.

Paige: Lexi, you can tell me the truth. What’s wrong?
Alex: I’m tired, overworked, and I do not get my homework done so it’s going to be late again. I am also going to fail that Biology test, because I fell asleep last night before I could study for the test.
Paige: (Hugs Alex) Lexi, you are pushing yourself too hard. Call Merri and take tonight off work. I’ll cover your shift because I have tonight off, honey.
Alex: (Clears her throat) I love too, but Emily and Chad needs the money too much right now.
Paige: But it’s not going to help Emily or Chad if you continue to push yourself and get sick.
Alex: Paige, I do not get sick. Ask Jay, he will tell you that.
Paige: Lexi, everyone gets sick at one time or another in their life.
Alex: The bell is going to ring. I’ll see you in the M.I. lab when class starts. Save me a seat.
Paige: Sure, but where are you going to go?
Alex: I need to use the restroom first.
Paige: Ok, honey.

Alex closes her locker door and relocks it. She puts her book bag back on her shoulder and starts walking toward the girls’ restroom. On the way, she throws her empty coffee cup into the trash can that in the hallway. Alex walks into the restroom and goes into the first stall and closes and locks the door. She then leans up against the locked door and unzips her book bag and pulls the bag from the drug store out. She takes the bottle of water she bought out along with the bottle of Advil cold and flu. She takes two Advil and three sips of the water to swallow the pills with. Alex then puts the Advil in the front pocket of her book bag and puts the cap on the water bottle. She puts the water bottle back into her book bag and re-zips the book bag. Paige is watching the door of the M.I. lab for Alex. When the last bell rings, Alex walks into the room and takes a seat next to Paige. Mr. Simpson looks over at Alex.

Mr. Simpson: Miss Nuñez, you just made it into class on time. Try to get here before the bell rings from now on.
Alex: (Speaking softly) Yes, Mr. Simpson.
Mr. Simpson: All right class, get working on any homework you need to get done for any of your classes.

Alex takes out her Biology notes and starts studying for the Biology make up tests she has to take during fifth period.

Alex takes out her Biology notes and starts studying for the Biology make up tests she has to take during fifth period.

Chapter Six

Alex was standing at her locker at the end of seventh period. She puts away the textbooks that she does not need for any of the homework she needs to catch up on, which is only math because Paige had gotten her caught up on math during lunch and math class. As she was putting the textbooks from the first half of the school day back into her book bag, she was thinking that she couldn’t believe she made it through the whole day of school without getting sent to the nurse by one of her teachers. By third period she had started to look feverish and feel achy all over. The teacher and classmates could tell that her throat was really sore because she was losing her voice. She is zipping up her book bag when Paige walked up behind her and wrapped her arms around Alex’s waist. She wants to pull away from Paige, but that would take too much energy, so she just continues to let Paige hold her.

Alex: I have to go visit Emily at the hospital. Will you come with me?
Paige: Sure, Lexi.

Paige took Alex’s right hand and the two of them walks out of Degrassi and got on the bus. Alex sits down in the first seat and Paige sets down next to her. Paige looks over at Alex who laying head on her shoulder.

Paige: Lexi honey, are you sure you are up to work tonight?
Alex: I think I’m going to let you take my shift tonight. I’m going to go home after seeing Emily and go to bed so I can get some sleep.
Paige: I’ll call Dylan and have him pick us up from the hospital and bring me my work uniform. He can give you a ride back to your apartment building.
Alex: (Clears her throat) That sounds great, thanks.

After Paige talks to her brother and Alex calls Merri and told her she is taking a sick day and that Paige is cover her shift. The rest of the ride to the hospital Alex rests her head on Paige shoulder and falls asleep. Paige lets Alex sleep until they get to the hospital, then wakes Alex up.

Paige: Lexi, we’re at the hospital. Wake up.
Alex: I’m awake.

Both girls stand up and pick up their book bags off the bus floor and then got off the bus. Paige takes Alex’s hand. The two girls walk into the hospital and take the elevator to the second floor. When the elevator opens up on the second floor, Alex leads Paige to room 201. Alex knocks on Emily’s hospital room door to let her know someone is there.

Emily: Who’s there?
Alex: It’s your daughter and Paige.
Emily: Come on in.

Alex and Paige walk into Emily’s room and see Chad sitting in a chair next to the hospital bed. Alex walks over to Emily and leans over and gives her a hug. Emily hugs her back and kiss Alex’s forehead. After Alex and Emily stop hugging each other, Emily pulls Paige into a big bear hug. Emily lets Paige go after a few minutes. Then the three ladies look at each other.

Chad: I have a job interview, so I’m going to go. See you at home tonight, Lexi.
Alex: Ok Chad, see you later.

Chad walks out of the room and Alex walks over to the chair Chad was setting in and drops down into the chair. Paige takes a seat at the end of Emily’s hospital bed. Paige and Emily both look at Alex who has slid down in the chair and slipped her shoes off then put her feet on Emily’s bed. Alex has just grabbed a tissue from the night stand and is now blowing her nose.

Emily: You’re not catching a cold are you, Lexi? When I kissed your forehead it felt like you running a fever?
Alex: I am fine, Emily! (Coughs)
Emily: Take tonight off work. We can afford for you to miss one day of work and still be able to pay the rent on Friday.
Alex: I am, Emily. Paige is covering my shift tonight so I can go home and get some sleep and catch up on homework that I am behind on.
Paige: So Emily, how are you doing?
Emily: Good. I’m on the mend.
Paige: I was just wondering how you fell down the stairs and what injuries you have. Lexi did not tell me the whole story.
Alex: (Coughs) I told you she just fell and Chad had nothing (Ah-Choo) to do with it.
Emily: It’s all right. I’ll tell Paige what happened. I was running late for work because I overslept and was in a hurry. I did not have my shoes on all the way, I ran out of the apartment and tripped on the first step and fell down four flights of stairs. As you can see, I broke my left and right wrist along with my left leg and my right ankle. I also broke my ribs.
Paige: How much longer do you have to be in the hospital for?
Emily: The doctor told me I can go home tomorrow, but I have to take it easy for the next three months. I’m just glad that I can leave this place tomorrow and go home to my daughter and Chad.
Paige: Lexi and I need to go. My brother is going to be here in any minute to pick us up.
Emily: Thanks for coming, you two. It was great to see you again, Paige.
Paige: It was nice to see you again too.

Alex slips her shoes back on. Then stand up and hugs Emily goodbye. Emily hugs Alex and kisses her forehead again. Then Emily hugs Paige again.

Emily: Lexi, when you get home, I want you to take your temperature.
Alex: Ok, Emily.

Both the girls grab their book bags and walk out of Emily’s hospital room and takes the elevator down to the main floor. When the doors open the girl’s walk towards the entrance. After a few steps, Alex stops and leans up against the wall. Paige stops and turns around, she then walks up to Alex.

Paige: Lexi, do you need help making it out to my brother’s car?
Alex: Yes.

Paige puts her right arm around Alex’s waist and lets her lean on her. The two girls then start walking to the entrance. As they walk out the door, Dylan pulls up to the hospital entrance and puts his car into park.

Paige: Lexi, do you want to sit in the front seat?
Alex: (Sniffs) Yeah.

Paige opens up the passenger’s door and Alex sits down in the front seat and throws her book bag onto the floor. Paige gets into the backseat and puts her book bag on the seat next to her. Dylan looks back at his sister and then at Alex who is sitting in the seat next to him. He then puts his car into drive and takes off.

Dylan: Do you want me to take you to work first or drop Alex off at home first?
Paige: I need to be dropped off first or I’ll be late for work.
Dylan: Ok.

Dylan drops Paige off at the mall and then he takes Alex home. He pulls into the parking lot of Alex’s apartment building, then pulls into a parking spot. He puts his car in park. Then looks over at, Alex and sees she has fallen asleep on the ride.

Dylan: (Lightly shakes Alex) Alex, you need to wake up, we’re at your place.
Alex: Ok, thanks (Coughs) for giving me a ride.
Dylan: No big deal. I hope you feel better soon.
Alex: Me too.

Chapter Seven

Alex opens the door of Dylan’s car and grabs her book bag off the car floor. She then stands up slowly and gets out of the car, she closes the door. Alex walks toward the building and opens up the door. Dylan was watching like he always does to make sure she gets inside the building before he takes off. Alex waves bye to Dylan once inside to let him know he can take off. Dylan sees that Alex made it in and backs out of the parking spots and heads home himself. Alex watches Dylan leave then slowly starts to walks up the four flights of stairs to the apartment she shares with Emily and Chad. She opens up the door of the apartment and walks inside. She is relieved to see that Chad has not gotten home from his job interview yet. Alex throws her book bag on the floor, and then kicks her shoes off her feet. Alex then heads into her bedroom and closes the door. Alex pulls her night shirt and PJ bottoms out of the top dresser drawer. She then changes into them. Alex was about to get into bed when she remembered that she needs to take her temperature. She walks into the bathroom and takes the thermometer out of the medicine cabinet and puts it into her mouth. As she waits for the thermometer to beep, she sits down on the edge of the bathtub. It beeps thirty seconds later and she takes the thermometer out of her mouth and looks at it to see she has a fever of 103.9. She stands back up and looks through the medicine cabinet to see what they have to reduce a fever because the Advil cold and flu not work at all. The only thing in the medicine cabinet is Tylenol cold and flu and she take two of them with some water from the bathroom sink. Then grabs a new box of tissue out of the hallway closet on her way back to her bedroom. Alex crawls into her bed and starts to have a coughing fit. After she stops coughing, she closes her eyes and goes to sleep.

Meanwhile, at the movie theater, Paige has been busy since, she walked behind the counter. Paige is taking orders at the snack counter when Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Nelson’s comes up to the counter.

Paige: Can I take your order?
Mr. Simpson: Two diets Pepsi and a large popcorn.
Paige: (As she starts to get their order) Ok, I’ll get that for you right away.
Mr. Simpson: Paige, is Alex sick? She did not look good at all at the end of the school day and I thought she was working tonight, not you.
Paige: (As she hands them their popcorn) She does not feel good, but she will not admit to be sick. She did ask me to take her shift tonight so she could get some sleep.

Paige then hands Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Nelson, their pops and the two of them go into the movie. Back at Alex’s apartment, Chad has come home and has opened up Alex’s bedroom door and sees she is asleep. He tiptoes into her bedroom and opens up her top dresser drawer and gets out the jar Alex keeps the money she earns in. Chad takes all the money out of the jar and puts it into his wallet. He then tiptoes back out of her bedroom and quietly closes the door. He leaves the apartment and goes to the party store at the end of the street. Alex sleeps through the whole thing.

Chapter Eight

That same night, two hours later, Chad answers the door and lets his friends into the house. His friends all go over to the refrigerator and each grabs a beer. Just then, there is another knock on the door.

Chad: (Yells) Come in!

Jay opens the door and walks right into the apartment. Chad hands him a beer as his friend Den goes over to the TV stand and turns on the CD player. He turns the volume up really loud. An hour later, the guys have had several beers and Chad has to turn the volume up on the CD player again so they could hear the music. Alex got woken up by the sounds of loud music. It made her jump out of bed she looks around to see where she is at. She sits back down on the edge of her bed and rubs her eyes. She tries to yell at Chad from her bedroom to ask him to turn the music down, but she cannot yell because her throat hurts too much. She stands back up and puts her gray robe on and ties it closed. She grabs a large handful of tissues and puts them in her robe pocket. She takes one more tissue out of the box on her way to the door to cover her mouth with as she coughs. When she walks out of her bedroom, she sees that the living room/kitchen/dinner area is full of Chad’s friends and that Jay is even there sitting on the couch talking to Chad. Alex walks over to the couch and stands in front of Chad. She gives him an evil look.

Chad: Yes, Lexi, what do you want? Don’t you have to work tonight?
Alex: (Ah-Choo) I called in sick tonight. Paige is covering my shift.
Chad: So what do you want?
Alex: Can you turn the music down? My head is killing me.
Chad: No, just deal with it.

Alex coughs into the tissue that is in her hand and at the same time, walks over to the CD player and turns it off. She puts her hands on her hips and clears her throat.

Alex: (Yells) Everyone get out of this apartment now, besides Chad and Jay! I mean it! Out!

Chad’s friends look at Chad, then back at Alex, and then pick up the cans of beer they were drinking and head out of the apartment. The last one out closes the door behind him. Alex then leans up against the wall. She knows that Chad is mad at her for making his friend’s leave the apartment, Chad stands up. He then walks over to Alex, he grabs her arms.

Chad: LEXI, WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING MAKING MY FRIENDS LEAVE?
Alex: (Whispers because her voice is going from yelling) I’m sick Chad . I just want the apartment quiet so I can get sleep. (Coughs) Besides, where did you (Ah-Choo) get the money for all the food, beer, and the new CD, Chad?
Chad: From your top dresser drawer, out of the jar that you keep your money in, Lexi.
Alex: How much did you (Ah-Choo) take Chad?
Chad: All of the money in the jar!
Alex: Chad, what were you thinking? I need that money to pay the rent on Friday and to pay all of the bills! (Coughs) Now what are we going to do?
Chad: We’ll be fine. I got the job, Lexi.
Alex: (Yells) No, we will not be fine, Chad! You won’t get a paycheck for two weeks! The rent is due this week, plus Emily’s hospital bill is also due! Chad, you did it this time! How am I going to come up with that large amount of money by Friday? Tomorrow is already Thursday, Chad!
Chad: Lexi, stop yelling at me!
Alex: No!

Chad grabs Alex’s arms again and throws her against the wall that on the other side of the room. Jay runs over to Chad and makes him go into Emily and his bedroom to calm down. Jay then helps Alex get up off the floor and over to the couch. He kneels down in front of Alex and feels her forehead.

Jay: Lexi, you are burning up!
Alex: I know that, Jay. I am sick.

Alex starts coughing and this time ends up coughing up a lot of stuff into the tissue she was holding in her hand. Both Jay and Alex look at what she has coughed up and see that it is a yellowish-greenish color. Alex stands up and throws the used tissue into the trash can, then looks at Jay.

Alex: Jay, can you give me a ride to Paige? I’m going to crash there tonight.
Jay: Sure, Lexi. Do you want me to get you anything from your bedroom?
Alex: Yeah, a clean pair of jeans and a tank top.
Jay: Ok, Lexi.

As Jay goes into her bedroom, Alex takes her robe off and puts her long-sleeve, black jacket back on and then takes the tissues out of her robe pocket and puts them into the jacket pocket. She picks her book bag up off the floor and slips her shoes on. Jay walks back over to her carrying a gym bag with her change of clothing in it.

Jay: I put the box of tissues into the gym bag for you too, Lexi.
Alex: Thanks.

Jay drives Alex to Paige place. Once there, Alex gets out of Jay’s car and grabs her book bag and gym bag. She waves goodbye to Jay as he pulls out of the driveway. Alex walks up to the front door and rings the door bell. She sees Dylan running down the stairs and over to the door. He opens it up and looks at Alex.

Dylan: Paige is not home from work yet, Alex.
Alex: (Shivering) I know that. I need to crash here (Coughs) tonight. Chad’s in one of his drunken fighting moods again and he threw me across the room because (Ah-Choo) I made his friend leave because they were too loud and I could not sleep.
Dylan: Alex, come on in and get out of the cold air. You already sound awful.

Alex walks into the house and Dylan takes her bag for her then helps Alex upstairs to Paige bedroom so she could lie down and get some sleep. Alex sits down on Paige bed and unzips her gym bag. She gets the tissue box out of the gym bag then sits the tissue on the night stand. She takes the tissues out of her pocket and puts them back into the box. She then stands up and pulls the covers back. She gets into bed and pulls the covers up over herself. Alex has just closed her eyes and has just start to fall asleep when Mrs. Michalchuk walks into Paige Bedroom and over to Alex. She sits down on the edge of the bed and feels Alex’s forehead. Just then, Dylan walks back into the room and hands his mom the thermometer.

Mrs. Michalchuk: Alex, I am going to take your temperature.
Alex: (Coughs) Ok, Mrs. Michalchuk.

Alex sits up in the bed, then takes the thermometer from Mrs. Michalchuk and puts the thermometer into her mouth. The two ladies then wait for the thermometer to beep. Thirty seconds later, Mrs. Michalchuk takes it out of Alex’s mouth when it beeps because Alex was shivering so much that she pulled the covers all the way up and her arms were now under the covers. Mrs. Michalchuk looks at the thermometer and then at Alex. Dylan hands Alex some Tylenol.

Mrs. Michalchuk: Alex, you have a fever of 104.3. I want you to go take a lukewarm shower and take the Tylenol that Dylan just handed you to see if the two things will help get your fever down.
Alex: Ok, Mrs. Michalchuk.

Alex gets out of bed and takes a lukewarm shower. After she is done in the shower, she put her nightshirt and PJ bottoms on. She then goes back into Paige Bedroom and gets into bed. She falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow.

Chapter Nine
Paige gets home from work and heads upstairs to her bedroom to changes out of her work uniform. She does not know that Alex was in her bedroom and is trying to sleep, because her dad did not say anything when he picks her up from work that night. She did not think to ask him if anything was wrong despite the fact her mom normal picks her up when she work Wednesday evening, because Dylan has hockey practice. Paige gets to her room and sees that her bedroom door is close. She thinks to herself, I know I left my door open this morning. Maybe Dylan shut it after he grabbed my work uniform out of the me bedroom. She open her bedroom door then flips on her bedroom light. She then walks into her room and throws her book bag on the bed and it lands right on top of Alex.

AlexSound congested) Ouch
Paige: Sorry Alex’s I did not know you were here and sleep in my bed. No one told me.
Alex: It, ok Paige (Coughs) I should have told your dad to tell you I was here.
Paige: And I should have known something was up when I see my bedroom door close when I left the door open this morning.
Alex: Can you turn the over (Ah-Choo) over head light off, and turn the desk light on?
Paige: Why, Baby?
Alex: The over head light is too bright and is bothering my eyes!
Paige: Ok sweetie

Paige walks over to her desk and flips the desk light on. She then goes and turns the overhead light off. Paige then starts grabbing her PJ and her towel up, she takes her shoes off. Paige starts to walk out of her bedroom, but stops and turn around and look at Alex.

Paige: Alex’s do you need anything before I go and take a shower?
Alex: No
Paige: Lexi are you sure because you did not eat anything all day, you have to be hunger?
Alex: I don’t have an (Ah-Choo) appetite.
Paige: How about something to drink Lexi?

Alex just shakes her head no and at the sometime grabs a tissue and starts coughing, greenish-yellowish mucus into the tissue as Paige head into the bathroom to take her shower. A half hour later Paige walks back into her bedroom and closes the door behind her. She then walks over to her bed and take a set next to Alex’s on the bed. She sees that Alex’s has her eyes closes and think she has went back to sleep. So she gets up and goes over to her desk to work on homework.

Alex: (Ah-Choo) honey where are you going come back over here?
Paige: (As she walks back over) I thought you were a sleep Lexi.
Alex: No, every time I try to go to sleep I start coughing.
Paige: And I thought you said you never get sick?
Alex: I usually don’t get sick, I must have caught a bug from (Ah-Choo) visit Emily at the hospital.
Paige: Maybe you should go see your family doctor Lexi?
Alex: No I’m sure I been bettered in a few days.
Paige: (Kiss Alex’s forehead) Lexi, you burning up, I’ll be back, I am going to go wet a washcloth down with cool water to wipe your face of with and then set the washcloth on top of your forehead.
Alex: Ok

Paige gets up and walks into the bathroom, she comes back a few minutes later and closes the door behind her. She walks over and set back down next to Alex on the bed and wipe her face off. Paige then folds the washcloth in half and set the washcloth on Alex’s forehead. Paige then goes to get up to do her homework but Alex grabs her arm.

Alex: Paige stays with me please and hold me.
Paige: Sure, Lexi I stay here and hold you.

Paige gets under the cover with Alex . Paige then wraps her arms around.

Paige: Alex are you cold because you are shivering?
Alex: Yeah

Then the two of them fall asleep in eachother arms and do not wake up till morning.

Chapter Ten
Paige alarm clock start buzzing in paige and Alex ears at six o’clock on Thursday morning. Alex runs her right head over the top of the alarm clock till she found the off switch. Alex’s turns off the alarm clock. Paige sat up and looks at her girlfriend who has laid back down and went right, back to sleep. She hears Alex’s coughing and also hears that Alex’s is making a really loud wheeze sound. Paige put her right hand on Alex’s forehead and finds that her fever has not gone down any, in fact she seems warm then last night before. Just then Paige hears someone knocking on her bedroom door.

Paige: Who is it?
Mrs. Michalchuk: Your mom, Can I come in I want to check on Alex’s?
Paige: Yeah, come on in!

Mrs. Michalchuk open up her daughters’ bedroom door then walks into the room and over to the bed.

Paige: Mom she burning up, I’ll keep wipes off her face with a cool washcloth all night but it hasn’t help. Alex’s feels warmer then she did last night at midnight, when I take her temperature and it was 104.8 degrees Fahrenheit. And she can’t stay awake. She only was awake long enough to turn the alarm off before she fell back to sleep.
Mrs. Michalchuk: (Feels Alex’s forehead) Paige go wake your brother up, then go start a lukewarm bath for Alex. We need to get her fever down fast.
Paige: You go get Dylan up mom I’m going to put one of my swimsuits on Alex’s, she would not want Dylan seeing her naked!
Mrs. Michalchuk: Ok, dear you are right Alex would not want Dylan to sees her naked, not that he would care at all. He would rather see Marco naked. I’ll have Dylan knocks before he comes into the room.
Paige: Ok

As soon as her mom leaves the room and closes her bedroom door Paige hop out of bed. She then grabs her black tankikini swimsuit out of her dresser drawer. She then shakes Alex’s and try to get her to wake up long enough to help put the swimsuit on. Alex set up and let Paige put the swimsuit top on her, then she lays back down and paige slides the swimsuit bottom on Alex’s. Meanwhile, in Dylan’s bedroom Mrs. Michalchuk is shake Dylan to wake him up.

Mrs. Michalchuk: Dylan wake up.
Dylan: (Rolls over and looks at the time) Mom, I still have two half hours till I need to get up for college.
Mrs. Michalchuk: Paige and I need your help!
Dylan: With what mom?
Mrs. Michalchuk: I need you to go into Paige bedroom and pick Alex’s up and carry her into the bathroom and put her in the bathtub, her fever is way too high. We need to get it down right away! And knock before open the door, Paige was changing her into a swimsuit, and change into one herself so she could get into the bathtub to help keep Alex head above the water.
Dylan: Ok Mom.

Mrs. Michalchuk runs out of her sons’ bedroom and into the bathroom and starts to fill the tub up with lukewarm water. By now Paige has finish get Alex’s change into the swimsuit and changes herself when Dylan knocks on her bedroom door.

Paige: Come in

Dylan open up his sisters’ bedroom door and walks into her room and lift Alex’s off his sister bed and carry Alex’s into the bathroom. Paige gets into the bathtub first and then Dylan sat Alex down into the bathtub. That when Paige notices that the whole right side of Dylan face is swollen and also that it is black, blue and purple.

Dylan: Paige what are you looking at?
Paige: Your face, what happened at hockey practice last night?
Dylan: The coach had a surprise for as last night at practice, my team got to play a practice match against the Detroit Red Wings.
Paige: Dylan that awesome, but what happened to your face?
Dylan: I was just about to tell you when you start talking Sis. Anyway two of my team mates and I get into a fight with three off the Red Wings player and I got punch in the face by one of the red wing player and then later in the game I get hit twice on that side of my face with a hockey stick.

Just then Alex’s opens her eyes and looks around the bathroom and then see she is sitting in the bathtub wear one of Paige swimsuits. Also that Paige, Mrs. Michalchuk and Dylan are in the bathroom with her. She then realizes that Paige is setting behind her and is hold her up so she would not slide underwater.

Alex: (Coughs) What I’m I doing in the bathtub?
Paige: You fever was really high Lexi, we had to bring the fever down. So my mom had Dylan put you into a cool bath.
Alex: (Coughs) Paige It was you that put the swimsuits on right?
Paige: Yeah, Lexi
Alex: (Shivering) As long as Dylan did not see me Naked?
Dylan: No, I have only saw you in clothing and now a swimsuit.
Mrs. Michalchuk: Let get you out of the bathtub and into some dry cloths.

Dylan help Alex out of the tub and hands her a towel and then Paige get out and he also heads Paige a towel. Then the two girls go into Paige Bedroom and get dress.

Chapter Eleven
Paige and Alex had got change and Paige has gone into the bathroom to comb her hair and brush her teeth and is now downstairs in the kitchen eat some breakfast before going to school. Alex’s had laid back down to get Paige to stop telling her she needs to stay home and in bed but as soon as Paige had gone downstairs Alex got back up and went into the bathroom and brushes her teeth and pulls her hair into a ponytail. She walks back into Paige Bedroom and grabs her book bag and put the box of tissues into her book bag and throws a few tissues into her jean pocket she then heads downstairs. Paige was just about to walk out the front door when Alex comes down the stairs. Paige stops dead in her tracks and looks at Alex.

Paige: Lexi, what do you think you are going?
Alex: Going to school.
Paige: You are sick Lexi, you need to stay at home and in bed. You also need to get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids.
Alex: (Cough) Paige we have a test in English class doing second hour and a test in seventh hour Media Immersion class. Plus I want to find out what (Ah, Ah-Choo) what I get on the biology test in fifth hour.
Paige: Lexi, you run a fever and you are still shivering. You cannot stop coughing or sneezes, you are in no shape to go to school.
Alex: (Rubbing her forehead) Paige I don’t want to fight about this, But I need to go to school today, we have to give that oral history report during six hour.
Paige: Fine, but I’m keeping a close eye on you all day and If I feel you fever getting to high I will call Jay and have him come pick you up and take you home.
Alex: Whatever.

Alex and Paige head out the front door and start walking to school. By the time they get to Degrassi Alex feels awful, but will not let Paige know how she is feeling. Doing home room first hour Alex and Paige catch up on their homework. Alex takes her English test doing second hour then lays her head down on the desk and closes her eyes till the bell to head to three hour starts ringing. It now four hour, which is lunch hour .Alex takes a sat at their normal Lunch table with Ellie and Jimmy. While Hazel, Marco and Paige go and buy, they lunch and Paige also buys Alex her lunch.

Ellie: Alex, You not look so hot, and sound awful you should go home!
Alex: (Wheezing) No!
Jimmy: Alex, Mr. Simpson will give you a make test and I’m sure the history test will let you and Paige give the oral history report when you get well.
Alex: (Coughs) I want to get it over with.
Paige: Lexi I get you a bottle of water and some chicken noddle soup to eat for lunch.
Alex: I don’t have an appetite Paige and my throat hurt too much to eat anything.
Paige: You are well enough to come to school, then you are well enough to eat some soup and drink some water.
Alex: Fine

Paige makes Alex eat the whole bowl of soup and drink all the water, as soon as she finish eating the bell for fifth hour rings. After lunch Jimmy, Paige, Marco, Ellie, Hazel and Alex walks into the biology class and takes their seats. Alex Starts coughing up greenish- yellowish mucus as soon as they walk out of the lunch room and has not stopped yet when they get to class and takes their sets in the back row of the classroom. Alex throws out the tissues she was use and grabs a new tissue out of her book bag.


Paige: You are not planing on going to work tonight Lexi?
Alex: Yeah I have to Paige, Chad steal (coughs) all the money from my top drawer (Ah-choo) yesterday night when I was asleep and spent it all a beer and food to party with his friends (coughs) I have to work tonight to have enough money on this weeks (coughs)
Paige: Check to be able to pay the rent.
Alex (Shakes head yes) Coughing
Paige: You are too sick to be work with other people food?
Alex: I ask Merri (coughs) if I can sale movie tickets.
Paige: Ok, I know I never will be able to talk you out of working, so I am not even going to try too.

Just then Mrs. Hatzilakos walk over to Alex and giver her graded test. Alex starts to take the test from Mrs. Hatzilakos but starts coughing too hard. Mrs. Hatzilakos set the test down on the desk and looks at Alex.

Mrs. Hatzilakos: (Feels Alex’s forehead) Alex’s I am sent you to the nurse, you sound awful and look and feel feverish.
Alex: Ok, Mrs. Hatzilakos (coughs).

Mrs. Hatzilakos writes Alex out a pass to the nurse and heads the pass to her. Alex walks to the nurse station and as soon as Nurse McKay sees Alex. She hands her a pass to go home sick. Alex walks back to Mrs. Hatzilakos classroom.


Mrs. Hatzilakos: What did the nurse tell you?
Alex: I am going home, I just need tell Paige something first.
Mrs. Hatzilakos: Ok, go head Alex.
Paige: What is it?
Alex: Here my half of the report for history class just in case Mr. Chew makes you give the report even though I am out sick.
Paige: Lexi, Stay home from work tonight, I cover for you and give you the money from my pay check!
Alex: (Coughs) I don’t have any sick days (coughs) left to miss at work, I have to go in anywhere.
Paige: Ok, But I’m going to make sure Merri does not push you too hard and let you do a job that you can set down for.
Alex: That nice of you I need to go, Chad on his way to pick me up. See you at work tonight.
Paige: Bye, sweetie.
Alex: Bye (coughs).

Alex waves bye at Paige and walks outside and gets into Chad Car and he drives her home. Once home she goes to her bedroom and lays down. Till she has to get up and ready for work.

Chapter Twelve
Alex alarm clock start buzzes in her ear tell her its time to get up and ready for work. She rolls over and hit the off button on her alarm clock and moan. She sits up in bed and opens her eyes and the room starts spinning, so she shuts her eyes again. She puts her feet over the edge of the bed and thinks to herself I’m in no shape to go into work tonight. She is just about to pick up her cellphone to call Merri and tell she is too sick to come into work, when there is a loud bang on her bedroom door and she hears Chad yelling at her.

Chad: Lexi, get your lazy butt out of bed and get ready for work.
Alex: I don’t think (coughs) I can make it into(coughs) work I am really dizzy and it hurt to breath.
Chad: If you do not go to work, there won’t be enough money on your pay check from the last two weeks to pay the rent and we will be kick out of the apartment.
Alex: That your fault, you steal the money from my (Ah-choo) room, if you did not steal (coughs) the money we would have enough money too pay the rent.
Chad: Lexi, you know you mom is in no shape to get kick out of the build right now.
Alex: Fine, I’m up.

Alex stumbles out of bed and changes into her work uniform. She grabs one of her large handbags. Then grabs the almost empty box of tissue and puts them into her handbag, along with her wallet and her keys. On the way out of her room she grabs a new box of tissues from the hall closet and throws it into the handbag on her way to the front door of the apartment. Emily watching her daughter as she slowly walking toward the front door. Emily grabs her daughter arm as she walks by her to stop Alex.

Alex: I need to leave for work
Emily: Lexi, you look awful and are run really warm, I am so sorry Chad stole the money from your jar. If he did not steal the money, you could still be in bed sleeping, baby.
Alex: I’m gone to be late.

With that Alex walks out the door and walks to the bus stop. When the bus pulls up to the bus stop she get on. She takes the bus to work, because she is too weak to walk to work. Alex gets to the mall and walk to the theater. She sees Paige work already and that Merri is wait for her. Merri walks up to Alex and look at her from head to toe, with a very worried look on her face.

Merri: You are work ticket booth tonight and if you need to take a break at any point, you can take one.
Alex: (Sounds congestion) Thank Merri.

Alex walks over to the ticket booth and goes inside and Kevin stands up and gives Alex the stool and leaves the ticket booth. Alex gets to work right away sales movie tickets. The first choice she gets she pulls out both boxes of tissue from her handbag and set then on the counter top in front of her.

Chapter Thirteen
Alex has been at work for two hours when Paige walks up behind her. Paige set down a box of Robitussin Chest Congestion and a bottle of water. Alex turns around in the stool and looks at her girlfriend. Both girls’ eyes lock onto eachother and Alex knows that Paige is not going to leave the ticker booth till she has taken the cold medicine she has bring her. Alex turns back around in her stool and take two of the Robitussin chest congestion capsule out and swallows them with help from a couple sips of water. Paige kisses Alex on her forehead before head out of the ticket booth and head back to the snack counter. A half hour later Alex has just finish have a coughing fit when see looks up to see Emma, her Little brother Jack and Manny in front of the window, the three people she does not want to deal with. Alex throws her used tissues into the trash can.

Alex: (Sound very congestion) What show would you like to see tonight?
Emma: Three tickers to the new Wiggles movie.
Alex: That will be (coughs) 17. 94.
Emma: (Hands Alex’s the money) That cough does not sound good Alex.
Alex: I know, here your tickets enjoy the movie.

Alex hangs up the sign that says I’ll be back in a few minutes in the window and then walks out of the ticket booth and to the ladies’ restroom, Paige goes over to the ticket booth and take the sing down and starts sales tickets to Alex come back. When Alex gets to the restroom, she starts coughing up mucus over the toilet in the first stall. After ten minutes she knows she can’t finish work that night. She knows that she has work enough of her shift to be able to just afford the rent. As she flash the toilet she hears someone walking into the restroom and knows by the sound of the person’s feet steps that it is Merri. She opens up the stall door and walks over to the skins and wash her hands. Merri walks up to Alex who is lean against the sink for supported and feels her forehead.

Merri: Alex’s I am sent you home, Paige has already call her brother Dylan’s. He is on his way here to pick you up and take you home and here your check for last week and this week.
Alex: Thanks
Merri: I do not want you to come back to work till you see a doctor.
Alex: Ok, Merri.

Chapter fourteen
Alex starts walking to the main entrance of the mall to meet Dylan when he gets there to pick her up. On the way out she stopped and cashed her pay check at the AMT. She puts the money in her handbag after the ATM has cashed her check. She starts to walk toward the main entrance again but stops and leans up against the wall, because she becoming really dizzy. She was also very short of breath. As she leans against the wall, she looks up at the clock on the wall across from her. She knows that Dylan is probably already there and waiting for her but she can seem to catch her breath and is too dizzy to try and move. She starts to reach for her cellphone to call Dylan to let him know where she is at and that she needs help getting out to the car. When Dylan and her mom walk up to her. Alex sees Dylan and her mom and knows by the look on both of their face, the two of them are really worried about her.

Alex: (Wheezes) Mom’s you are supposed to be staying off your feet!
Dylan: I stop by you place on my way here and pick Emily up. I am really worry about you and so Paige and our mom and Dad are also worry. We all think you need to see a doctor right away Alex.
Emily: So he stopped by and filled me in about what Paige told him on the phone. Dylan told me that you kept making wheezes sound and had to keep take break to cough up yellowish-green mucus. Also that you had a high fever.
Alex: (Wheezes) I’m fine I just want to go home.
Dylan: I am taking you to the ER to get seen by a doctor Alex!
Alex: (wheezes and Coughs) No
Emily: Alexandra Marie Nunez, You are going to the ER if you want to or not!
Alex: No, I will be fine after I get some (coughs) sleep.
Emily: Alexandra Marie Nunez you are pale as a ghost and are not able to stop shivering.
Alex: (Wheezes) And you forget really dizzy and also that I am having problem catch my breath.
Dylan: Just let me take you to the ER to be seen by a doctor Alex?
Alex: No

With that Alex starts walking towards the entrance and away from her mom and Dylan. She has made it half way to the entrance when the room starts spin and she begins to feel really light head she blinks her eyes, because the mall seems to become rally dark on her. She then starts to feel like she is falling. Dylan runs over to Alex and catches her before she hits the floor. Emily reach Dylan and Alex, Just as Dylan has catches Alex’s and put her in his arms.

Dylan: I’ll carry her out to my car and lay her on the back seat.
Emily: Ok, but I am going to ride in the back with her, in case she wakes up on the way to the hospital.
Dylan: That fine

Emily gets into the backseat of Dylan Ford Mustang Convertible first then Dylan lays Alex down so her head is rest on her mom lap. He then gets into the drive seat of his car. The first thing he does is to hit the button that put the top of his car up and then he starts the car up. He then takes off and head toward Toronto General Hospital. Alex starts to come to as Dylan pulls up to the ER entrance and parks his Mustang and turns his car off. He gets out of the car and run into the entrance of the ER he grabs one of the wheelchairs. He pushes the wheelchair out to his car and lift Alex out of the backseat and puts her into the wheelchair. Dylan push Alex into the ER wait room, then goes and move his car to a parking space. As Dylan moves his car Emily sign Alex in at the admitted desk so she got put on the list to be seen. The nurse hand Emily a piece of paper with the number five on it.

Emily: This mean there are four other people to be seen before her right?
Nurse: Yeah.
Emily: Ok

Emily walks back over and takes a set in the chair next to where Alex is set at in the wheelchair. Dylan walks back into the ER wait room and takes a seat next to Emily after he brings a footstool over for Emily to put her feet up on. Meanwhile an hour and half later Paige is filling up two extra large bags of pop up for a customer. She hands the customer their popcorn, then grabs the two extra lager cups from the pop machine and puts a lid on the cup. She gives them to the customer, which were Spinner and Jay’s. Spinner and Jay start to walk toward the theater the movie they are see is in but turn back around and head back over to the snack counter.

Paige: Now what Spinner and Jay?
Spinner: Paige what wrong, you seem really worried about something?
Paige: I’m fine.
Jay: No, you are not. It Lexi right, is she still sick?
Paige: Yeah, Merri sent her home sick, and my brother and her mom Emily took her to the ER to get seen by a doctor. It has been an hour and half since they left here and I have not heard anything from Dylan, Emily or Alex yet.
Jay: I’m sure as soon as they know anything at all Dylan will call and let you know what going on.
Spinner: Alex probably has not even get to see an ER doctor yet you know how busy the ER gets.
Paige: Yeah, that probably it.
