| Well, I was just thinking about this the other day. I have built 3 of my own systems but bough 2 as well. Is it worth it/cheaper to build your own then to buy it from a company? Im not so sure anymore. Most of the time when I build my own I get carried away and end up spending $3000 lol like with my last system and getting a gforce 8800 when it first came out. So is it worth building your own for a lower cost or are you better off buying it from a well known company? The most expesive thing is freakin windows RAWR I hate that. |

| I always build my own machine. That way I know exactly what's inside it, and I can replace devices should anything go horribly wrong. Also, the machine I currently have would have gone for about $2600 from any computer retailer. I built it for $1400. |

| Stirrer Of Shit | If you're building the highest end machine possible, its still probably cheaper to build. A regular, everyday machine - cheaper to buy. |

| I built a couple back in the day, and definitely saved some money then. I'm not so sure anymore. Though Rasczak is probably right---it depends on how much computer you're looking for. |

| I see the Fnords. | I always build my own. They're always cutting corners in the pre-built systems. Plus, I like screwing with PC hardware, so it's win-win. If you're trying to stick to a budget, well, stick to it, damn it. ;O) I usually spend between $600-$800 starting from scratch, not including a monitor. That seems to be about the sweet-spot for price/performance. |

| I've never heard of anyone building a laptop. I also know two people who build desktop pc's. |

| it used to be cheaper to build, 7/8 years ago, but now its cheaper to buy, the markup added by dell/mesh/etc is more than offset by the bulk discounts they get in most cases. |

| It's also cheper, I think, to buy a desktop as well. But you don't have the portability and compactness that a laptop has. |
