As for freeware, I used to use AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads it was okay, but at the time, I couldn't un-install it ... and it totally fried my cable internet connection for some reason. I ended up wiping windows out and re-installing. I'm not saying it's totally bad, but probably use with caution...

The CCC (Chaos Computer Club) one of the biggest and most influencing hacker organisations showed that they only produce more security risks than they help to prevent. There is a funny vid, about this, where they show how to built malicious software that just presses the "allow" button, when a warning pops up ;P Last edited by MRiGnS : 09-24-2007 at 01:09 PM.

| For the past couple years, the only thing I've used for security is the WindowsXP firewall and Avast free home edition. The only security issues I've ever had we're caused entirely by my own doing. Free anti-virus software download The program usually updates daily and does a great job at scanning incoming files. There is also a free version for Linux. |

I'd look into that battery issue with Ubuntu. I think I've read about Ubuntu's power manager 'misreading' certain kinds of batteries, but I thought it was fixable. Maybe look around on ubuntuforums.

| If you're careful and you use anything but Internet Explorer you should probably be OK. Most generic viruses are geared toward IE since it's the most used browser. It's been a while since I used Windows, but when I did I used Firefox and didn't 'click' on untrusted things and I managed to stay pretty clean. Good luck! |

| I'd vote for NOD32 from eset.com (I think). It's light, fast and stays out of the way, but isn't free. Don't like Norton, Trend Micro and McAfee. Avoid ZoneAlarm and firewalls. The built-in XP firewall is good enough. If you're serious about firewall protection I'd get external hardware. I'd consider, when you have the patience, trying harder to get Ubuntu to work. There have been many many people successful getting power management working correctly. Just some chipsets are a little more challenging. Here's some wiki articles. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/?action=full...esearch=Titles |

That doesn't really bother me (and I wouldn't go so far as to call that 'spying on my computer' ). I don't think I've ever received email from Grisoft and my spam count is still pretty much zero, too.And anyway, I hardly ever boot up windows nowadays, so I think I'll just sit this one out. Thanks for the info all the same. ![]()

| Also, if you really want to be safe when browsing online, ditch Flock (yea, I know it's based off Mozilla) and use Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript installed. You can choose where on the browser to display the buttons, or have the option to not show them at all (if you want to cut back on all clutter) ![]() (I keep the icons on the bottom corner) |

| the wicked one | You should avoid any personal firewall, they only cause more security leaks. The Windows firewall isn't safe either. Malicious software can get easily control over all of your ports when you rely on personal firewall solution. Get a decent router with a built-in whitelist firewall and deactivate UPnP, and only forward the ports you really need for the pc which really needs them. you can easily built a router yourself for less money. there are many guides on the internet. |
