Default Help protect my PC!

Hi, i already use ubuntu but it is not freindly with my laptop and the battery dies in less than 30min. SO unfortunately I need to use xp when not near a plug and need inet access.

What are some good antivirus and antimalware for a stupid laptop running xp?

Probably norton or symantic antivirus are the best ... but are not free.

As for freeware, I used to use AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads

it was okay, but at the time, I couldn't un-install it ... and it totally fried my cable internet connection for some reason. I ended up wiping windows out and re-installing. I'm not saying it's totally bad, but probably use with caution...

I had that problem with Norton. I uninstalled it, but it left behind a program that incessantly warned me that I wasn't protected and should buy more protection from Norton.......

Why not use Opensource GPL software...like ClamWin. It's completely free, works like a charm and unlike AVG it does not spy on your computer.

A major app service provider discovers that a well-known, open-source anti-virus tool beats the pants off its commmercial competition. And while it proves just good open-source development can get, it also raises some disquieting questions about the state of the security software market.
Another hint, don't use personal firewalls.
The CCC (Chaos Computer Club) one of the biggest and most influencing hacker organisations showed that they only produce more security risks than they help to prevent.

There is a funny vid, about this, where they show how to built malicious software that just presses the "allow" button, when a warning pops up ;P

For the past couple years, the only thing I've used for security is the WindowsXP firewall and Avast free home edition. The only security issues I've ever had we're caused entirely by my own doing.

Free anti-virus software download

The program usually updates daily and does a great job at scanning incoming files. There is also a free version for Linux.

How does AVG spy on your computer?

I'd look into that battery issue with Ubuntu. I think I've read about Ubuntu's power manager 'misreading' certain kinds of batteries, but I thought it was fixable. Maybe look around on ubuntuforums.

If you're careful and you use anything but Internet Explorer you should probably be OK. Most generic viruses are geared toward IE since it's the most used browser. It's been a while since I used Windows, but when I did I used Firefox and didn't 'click' on untrusted things and I managed to stay pretty clean.

Good luck!

I tried, in two seperate posts and searched the forums, im kinda disgrunteled at the fact that no one answered me. So that being the case i pretty much gave up.. Ill keep ubuntu on my Desktp, im still diehard ubuntu fan but im conforming to my limitations for now.

I'd vote for NOD32 from eset.com (I think). It's light, fast and stays out of the way, but isn't free. Don't like Norton, Trend Micro and McAfee. Avoid ZoneAlarm and firewalls. The built-in XP firewall is good enough. If you're serious about firewall protection I'd get external hardware.

I'd consider, when you have the patience, trying harder to get Ubuntu to work. There have been many many people successful getting power management working correctly. Just some chipsets are a little more challenging. Here's some wiki articles.

So basically, it's just whatever info you provide when registering the program on install. I can't really remember what that was exactly, but probably nothing more than an email address and maybe country of residence.
That doesn't really bother me (and I wouldn't go so far as to call that 'spying on my computer' ). I don't think I've ever received email from Grisoft and my spam count is still pretty much zero, too.
And anyway, I hardly ever boot up windows nowadays, so I think I'll just sit this one out. Thanks for the info all the same.

But now I'm curious about ZoneAlarm. Why should I avoid it?

Also, if you really want to be safe when browsing online, ditch Flock (yea, I know it's based off Mozilla) and use Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript installed. You can choose where on the browser to display the buttons, or have the option to not show them at all (if you want to cut back on all clutter)

(I keep the icons on the bottom corner)

You should avoid any personal firewall, they only cause more security leaks. The Windows firewall isn't safe either.

Malicious software can get easily control over all of your ports when you rely on personal firewall solution.

Get a decent router with a built-in whitelist firewall and deactivate UPnP, and only forward the ports you really need for the pc which really needs them.

you can easily built a router yourself for less money. there are many guides on the internet.

Unless you have really sensitive stuff on your computer, or you're just a paranoid freak, I can't imagine why you would need a firewall.
