| So yeah I am a total nerd with 5 computers two sitting apart on my floor now and 5 monitors lol. They are all PC's though I was thinking about getting a mac I used one about 2 years ago and seemed to like it but was confused with some of it. It seems they are good for digital design and things like that. Whats your take on Mac computers and what are some cool things you like about them perhaps you cant do with a PC? Thanks! | People I know (programmers and graphic artists) who have macs love them. I've never gotten one though because of the price ... they seem too expensive IMO. But I'm just running linux (mostly command line tools) ... so I just buy the cheapest machines (@ $200-$300). ![]() But of course, it's not a black and white issue ... mac lovers will contend that macs really aren't more expensive if you loaded a pc with equivalent hardware. I suppose it's really more a matter of what you want... |

| Prices of macs have fortunately come down since the introduction of the Intel chips. I don't really have anything against macs. I hate mac fanboys, or any and all fanboys for that matter. I've been looking at the new iMacs (it will be my first mac) For around $2000 [USD] I would be getting a 24" monitor, 2GB of memory, 320GB HDD, double layer DVD RW, mouse, keyboard, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 256MB ATI HD2600 3 years ago I paid a little over that for a 3.2GHz P4, 512MB memory, 200GB worth of IDE HDD, single layer DVD±RW, pile of crap 256mb ATI 9600XT (agp), a copy of XP Pro, a case with a PSU, basic MS optical mouse, and mediocre multimedia keyboard. Luckily I already had a monitor and speakers at the time (would tacked on another few hundred) So, for less money a few years later, I'm getting quadrupled memory, three times the processing power (using less energy and creating way less heat), a widescreen LCD that is 5" larger, better disc drive, faster HDD, and it takes up roughly 75% less space than my current tower and CRT. I still hate the fanboys. EDIT: I'm buying a mac because I need to for school, plus the design is just so damn sexy. |

I agree about the fanboys. It seems that macs are nice, and some PCs are nice too. The difference is that you can buy a cheap shit PC, but you really can't get a cheap shit Mac. There's only one company that builds macs, but dozens that build PCs. More options with PCs, but the best PCs are probably comparable in price and quality to a Mac. At least, that's my view. I'm like yaaarrrrgggg, I buy cheap and run linux.

| Oh, I plan on triple booting this thing along with XP Pro and some linux distro (gotta see what im feeling by then) Ugh, I would only plan on dealing with apple when purchasing. Although, my friend has had nothing but good experience with them. His harddrive fried on his Macbook Pro and they salvaged as much as possible and ended up replacing the whole laptop, free of charge. |

EDIT: missed what you are quoting.... Some people just have massive libraries of music that they listen to or have a few hundred videos that they watch. Not really the result of doing any work. Last edited by 7thwave : 09-23-2007 at 11:46 AM.

I'm kind of an idealist, when it comes to basic party of my OS. I don't condemn anyone for using or producing closed software and I can understand it in some pieces of software as encryption or compression algorithms. I'm fine with it when people buy their products and like to use it. But I don't want to support such business models, at least not willingly.

| Well I record drums, piano, synth, string, and certain fills in stereo 16-bit 44Khz .wav. Nearly all guitar and bass tracks are recorded in mono in the same quality. Stereo tracks in that quality use around 10mb per minute, so it adds up quickly. |

| I used a Mac for a few months recently, and came out of the experience with mixed feelings about it. It's light years better than Windows, although that doesn't seem to be controversial here. But as somebody willing deal with rough edges, and willing to fix a few of them myself, I much prefer Linux. I don't actually like some of the vaunted Mac user interface. The Dock still seems designed more for flash than for functionality. The availability and layout of keyboard shortcuts is inconsistent and not particularly ergonomic. Some parts of it are annoyingly closed, particularly where customization could affect Apple "branding" and general look and feel. I also had a few problems with the hardware (MacBook Pro). That said, the Mac is still way more polished than Linux, and much better designed than Windows. You can generally find a way to do whatever you want on it, particularly given it's BSD/Unix-y core. You can get a cheap-o Linux box, but Apple will generally use better grade components and stand behind them. I'd be particularly worried about a no-name laptop. Is it worth the premium? I'd say yes, but only if you are intent on having the most polished/sexy machine. If you don't mind dancing around a few more issues and rough edges go with Linux. It leaves you more in control. |

| I did that so many times when I first started using Ubuntu that I'm fine at this point just letting it run. I have to admit tho, I did have fun with it during those times and I felt like a real geek at times. |
