Default Is a Mac worth it?

So yeah I am a total nerd with 5 computers two sitting apart on my floor now and 5 monitors lol. They are all PC's though I was thinking about getting a mac I used one about 2 years ago and seemed to like it but was confused with some of it. It seems they are good for digital design and things like that. Whats your take on Mac computers and what are some cool things you like about them perhaps you cant do with a PC?
Thanks!

You're not a total nerd, only a partial nerd. A total nerd would be unaware that your situation is not normal.......

People I know (programmers and graphic artists) who have macs love them.

I've never gotten one though because of the price ... they seem too expensive IMO. But I'm just running linux (mostly command line tools) ... so I just buy the cheapest machines (@ $200-$300).

But of course, it's not a black and white issue ... mac lovers will contend that macs really aren't more expensive if you loaded a pc with equivalent hardware. I suppose it's really more a matter of what you want...

Prices of macs have fortunately come down since the introduction of the Intel chips. I don't really have anything against macs. I hate mac fanboys, or any and all fanboys for that matter. I've been looking at the new iMacs (it will be my first mac)

For around $2000 [USD] I would be getting a 24" monitor, 2GB of memory, 320GB HDD, double layer DVD RW, mouse, keyboard, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 256MB ATI HD2600

3 years ago I paid a little over that for a 3.2GHz P4, 512MB memory, 200GB worth of IDE HDD, single layer DVD±RW, pile of crap 256mb ATI 9600XT (agp), a copy of XP Pro, a case with a PSU, basic MS optical mouse, and mediocre multimedia keyboard. Luckily I already had a monitor and speakers at the time (would tacked on another few hundred)

So, for less money a few years later, I'm getting quadrupled memory, three times the processing power (using less energy and creating way less heat), a widescreen LCD that is 5" larger, better disc drive, faster HDD, and it takes up roughly 75% less space than my current tower and CRT.

I still hate the fanboys.

EDIT: I'm buying a mac because I need to for school, plus the design is just so damn sexy.

Sure, but you could beat the hell of your old system in price and quality with a PC now as well.

I agree about the fanboys.

It seems that macs are nice, and some PCs are nice too. The difference is that you can buy a cheap shit PC, but you really can't get a cheap shit Mac. There's only one company that builds macs, but dozens that build PCs. More options with PCs, but the best PCs are probably comparable in price and quality to a Mac. At least, that's my view. I'm like yaaarrrrgggg, I buy cheap and run linux.

I don't like apple because of their business policy, so I won't buy a mac how sexy it may look.

Unless your doing video, photo or music on it, I don't know what I would do with all that storage space. Give me linux and give me my bank account.

I have a 120GB hard drive, and I've used about 5GB of it. How do people fill up their hard drives?

Ugh, I would only plan on dealing with apple when purchasing. Although, my friend has had nothing but good experience with them. His harddrive fried on his Macbook Pro and they salvaged as much as possible and ended up replacing the whole laptop, free of charge.

When you do audio work, you can easily use between 1 and 3 gigs per song depending on the amount and quality of the tracks.

EDIT: missed what you are quoting....

Some people just have massive libraries of music that they listen to or have a few hundred videos that they watch. Not really the result of doing any work.

Well, if your running windoze, you need a lot of space for all that spam, adware and spyware, not to mention all the security crap needed for daily survival.

My statement was rather pointed, at their security or should I say secrecy policy and about their soft and hardware being as closed and non-free as you can imagine.

I'm kind of an idealist, when it comes to basic party of my OS.

I don't condemn anyone for using or producing closed software and I can understand it in some pieces of software as encryption or compression algorithms.

I'm fine with it when people buy their products and like to use it. But I don't want to support such business models, at least not willingly.
regards,
Julian

I guess you're rolling your own music? That makes some sense, I guess. Never done it myself.

I guess I can see how the movies would take up that kind of space. I have around 30 CDs on my computer (in ogg format) and it takes up less than 1 GB. You'd have to have thousands of CDs. Either that or have them in wav format.

Well I record drums, piano, synth, string, and certain fills in stereo 16-bit 44Khz .wav. Nearly all guitar and bass tracks are recorded in mono in the same quality. Stereo tracks in that quality use around 10mb per minute, so it adds up quickly.

I used a Mac for a few months recently, and came out of the experience with mixed feelings about it. It's light years better than Windows, although that doesn't seem to be controversial here. But as somebody willing deal with rough edges, and willing to fix a few of them myself, I much prefer Linux.

I don't actually like some of the vaunted Mac user interface. The Dock still seems designed more for flash than for functionality. The availability and layout of keyboard shortcuts is inconsistent and not particularly ergonomic. Some parts of it are annoyingly closed, particularly where customization could affect Apple "branding" and general look and feel. I also had a few problems with the hardware (MacBook Pro).

That said, the Mac is still way more polished than Linux, and much better designed than Windows. You can generally find a way to do whatever you want on it, particularly given it's BSD/Unix-y core. You can get a cheap-o Linux box, but Apple will generally use better grade components and stand behind them. I'd be particularly worried about a no-name laptop.

Is it worth the premium? I'd say yes, but only if you are intent on having the most polished/sexy machine. If you don't mind dancing around a few more issues and rough edges go with Linux. It leaves you more in control.

Personally, I think it's fun to periodically break my computer and then have to fix it. It gives me something to do.

I did that so many times when I first started using Ubuntu that I'm fine at this point just letting it run. I have to admit tho, I did have fun with it during those times and I felt like a real geek at times.
