not sure this will work within wordpress (aren't they any plugins?), but got to know about photon and albumshaper from a friend's blog (shameless advertisement!). It's all in French, but you can check out the galleries he's made. He's also got a wordpress blog.

Ya, there are plugins for wordpress but I'm going to replace it with some self made stuff. so I want some standalone software.

Those two are standalone (one CLI, one GUI). and he's got a /photon file on his site. Did not see anything for slide show though.
