I'm a student, so I think I'll stick with my CRT. It's 21" and cost me $0. So I have to degauss it every so often, so what?
Exactly what does a degauss do? On my screen here, I do a degauss, but I don't see any difference. Should there be?

the calibration isnt a problem. its just that its a CRT .

This is untrue. What is true is that CRTs lose brightness over time and often aren't made to produce as much light as LCDs are. Just look at the difference between blacks on an LCD and blacks on a CRT.

There is no question that tube will provide you with more accurate color, essentially unlimited resolution, etc.

However, there is no question they are bulkier, use more power, and don't look better to 95% of people who have no sense of the difference even if the two were side by side. Of the 5% who can tell the difference, 4% prefer the convenience of an LCD and other benefits, and 1% need to use CRTs because of their profession and hobbies requiring the absolutely most accurate colors possible.

Even just 3-4 years ago, those numbers would more be like 4.5% of the 5% needing the CRT, but LCDs have gotten better and now gamers have no ghosting issues with LCDs, etc.

So the bottomline is, LCDs are better for consumers, businesses, most end users, etc. For some professionals, nothing yet beats a CRT.

However, LED backlit screens could change all of that...

This is yet another one of those 'the right tool for the right job' topics. If you are a professional designer and want perfect reproduction of colours onscreen then you should be buying yourself a decent CRT (such as the old Trinitron monitors, sadly no longer made), or pay for a very high quality LCD (yes, some do exist to do the job).

If you want to do normal things then you can live quite happily with a cheap LCD. If you want to play high FPS games or movies then pay a bit more and get one with a very low response time - but even then they aren't that expensive (eg. a 2ms response time 19" LCD costs around 150GBP).

Any comments such as "CRT's are just better because X" are misguided and elitist...

LCD's are good for average every day use, and some gaming. But they don't give true color. They're getting better, but CRT's are still the way to go.

FYI, burn-in can and does still occur on LCD's, it just takes a lot longer for it to happen. I use a 19" LCD because my 17" CRT was consuming way too much power for the amount of time I use it, so I use that as a secondary monitor for when I work on computers.

The near future is LED technology, and not so far away is holographic. Speaking of holographic...whatever happened to virtual reality? LOL. Another topic for another day I guess LOL.

And if you are working in Graphic design I'm pretty sure you can afford it. That's the point - if you needed the high quality equipment for your job then you would pay for it.

The Westinghouse stuff sucks. Quality control is way worse on those screens and if you've ever seen one next to another LCD you'll see how washed out the color looks. It'll get the job done, but isn't worth the savings.

For what I've seen, Samsung, NEC, and Viewsonic have the best LCDs for computers.

If you are a hobbiest then you don't *need* the expensive kit. If you are going to go into 3dcg then you should invest in some expensive kit...

Very well. I'm just saying that in the past, I've never found the Westinghouse displays to be impressive at all. They've always struck me as just a step above LCD drop outs like Olevia.

With any LCD it will come down to the one you get out the batch, however. I understand your point.

i do photos and general browsing and they are fine for me.

crt's are just to bulky
at times like this ,i should have gone fishing 24 hours in a day,24 stubbies in a carton, coincidence.?

I saw a sign that said:-caution small children playing,so i slowed down.then i remembered i am not scared of small children
