| Interested participant | Well, It's about building a website along the lines of SecondLife. It will be completely Flash-Based - and we can include all the features of a community in there - like Profiles, Blogs, Forums, Games, Homes, etc. It's like taking online interaction to the next level...! I have a considerable experience with Flash - to start working on it atleast - but i'll need help with the avatar sketchings - the PHP backend , etc. |

Besides, making a completely Flash-based website is a bad idea. First, there are people with older computers, and they don't run Flash very nicely. Second, some people don't have Flash (though this is becoming less true every month). Third, search engines are going to love all the no-text pages you set up. If you still want the graphics of Flash, I recommend looking into the new Silverlight, or the competitor whose name I cannot remember. And don't even get me started on using tables for layout. ![]()

| i'm into graphics but probably not the kind you need for this project. for me the next level of online interaction would be to have a completely open source platform. i've heard second life is moving in that direction but how far can they go ? |

For the first two reasons, i'll state what you said - that's not really an excuse anymore. Most of the people do have flash nowadays. As, for the search engine problem, well, - there is going to be only one page. And we only need the site address to show up in the search results. An i don't think community information as such will be required for search. I do not need Flash only because of the graphics. And mind you, graphics in Flash are pretty convenient and i think they greatly reduce the loading time and size, besides giving greater flexibility and manipulation power. I also need it because, we'll basically be dealing with Avatars 'in motion'. It's going to be a coordinate based system. Flash interacting with PHP for storing and retrieving data. It's worth giving a try.

| Discussion starter | I do know PHP, but I cannot help since I have way too much going on already. If you decide to learn PHP, be sure to pick up a book on PHP security - it's amazing how vulnerable PHP code is without the right knowledge! |

| Commentator | Yeah, same thing here. Many years of experiance with PHP/MySQL, HTML, CSS, Photoshop 6-CS3 (=]), 3DSM, Cinema 4D; but the more I know means the more time I'm working on more important projects. Besides, why reinvent the wheel? |
