| I use whatever works. An OS is a tool, not a religion, but the way some fanbois go on about it, you'd think it was. At the moment, I use *nix, solely for the reason that windows doesn't work (for me) and I'm not smug enough or a big enough asshole to own a Mac. |

| Discussion starter | Are you kidding me? I've tried both sides of things. From Windows 98 through Windows Vista, from RedHat 7 to MEPIS to Ubuntu from Dapper-beta days. Ubuntu wins (though Vista is scarily close). (Mind you, I have not tried OpenSuSE, Gentoo, or anything else not mentioned.) I really don't like the reviews that say "Vista Stinks!" because they aren't true. Take a look at Vista, and you'll see many improvements. Security, searching, efficiency, and ease-of-use. Sure, Vista looks cool, but the main point is that it is useful. If I don't use Ubuntu, Vista's next. ![]() |

| Same here. In some cases I've found it to be a lot easier than Windows. Take scanning for example. I was expecting all sorts of hassle connecting an HP all in one machine and getting the scanner working, but it worked within 1 minute. I didn't even need to install any software which certainly isn't the case with Windows. |

| Ubuntu Rules! Not undermining the other Linux versions. Even though I think Open source as a whole is still far away from fixing Ubuntu`s bug #1 my concern is that some day the core principles of free software(open and FREE) might some day be "outlawed" by the last dirty trick of MS. and it would be up to communities to avoid such a calamity to happen. |

| Interested participant | Actually, not all Mac users are a pain in the...well, I think you know the next word. Anyways, there are many who are just regular everyday people. But my problem lies in Windows users, here's a typical exchange between me and a Windows user: User: Agh! My computer crashed again! Me: What operating system are you using? User: Windows. Someone should make something better. Me: How about Mac or Linux. User: No, I like Windows. It works well for me. ![]() |

Seriously, I like linux -- in particular kubuntu -- but I am very strongly against MS because of what I consider to be unethical business practice. So yeah, linux works for me, but it's philosophical too. | |

| Interested participant | When I first switched to Linux, I was extremely strong against Microsoft. I would even bash Microsoft in reports at school. It has now been a few years and I've come to accept that things probably won't change. I'm still against Microsoft, but one just has to come to accept them because it's what the users want. I'll also mention that when I first switched to Linux, I found myself turning against Apple as strongly as I was against Microsoft. About a year ago, my uncle offered to sell me his old G4 for $250. I bought it, in hopes of trying out Ubuntu on it to see if it would run different. Well, that G4 still hasn't had Ubuntu installed on it but instead has become one of my main systems here. I'm currently looking into purchasing a Mac Pro as the software I use (even though I use it on Windows right now) runs exceptionally well on the Mac Pro. I still use Linux, but it's mainly for development, storage, heavy processing, and posting on a website called SocialDiscussion.com. |

| I've used: TRS-DOS (Color Extended Basic version on a TRS-80 Color Computer, model I) Unix System III, System V MS-DOS 3.1, 4.0, 5.22 MS-Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, 98se, Me and XP MacOS 8, 9, 10 FreeBSD Linux (Debian, Gentoo, lots and lots of other distros) My favorite: Ubuntu Linux. It's got a good balance of stability and current features and it's the easiest OS to install and set up that I've experienced (at least on the 8 or 9 systems I've installed it on)...and it's FREE, in both senses of the word. |

| I use Windows for gaming but I don't give a damn about it. I uninstalled my anti-virus on Windows coz it was taking up precious space for gaming. We all should use Linux coz there's no need for an anti-virus |
