Mine would be adding a transparent Eterm to the desktop, its really handy to have there waiting (and neat). I've also tied it in with Screen auto opening a few screens on it (and running) irssi, hellanazb and two spare shells.

You may need to apt-get Eterm.

Eterm --trans -x --shade=0 --scrollbar=0 --buttonbar=0 --geometry=80x15+0+790 --foreground-color=white --color4 rgb:94/43/25

Set for 1280x1024 and places the term in lower left, reduce the 790 to move it up for lower screensizes.

Adjusting the swappiness of the kernel. Basically controlling how much the kernel will favor swap usage.

sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=x

The x should be any number between 0 and 100. The lower the number the less likely it will use swap.

To make it permanent you need to add

vm.swappiness=x

to /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot.
