I have been strongly considering getting a Mac (Pro). I've worked a bit with them and I must say, I'm pretty impressed with OS X.

However, I've worked with Linux/Windows for much longer (Windows longer than Linux sadly). So that makes me not so apt to just run out and purchase a Mac -- espeicially with how much they are.

That being said, my experiences is this. Most Microsoft products, although more main stream and develped on, do not work as well as they should. Whereas with Linux and Mac products, I have found them to be much more reliable and more appealing to work with.

That's just my personal experiences though -- YMMV

I'm getting a Macbook Pro this summer to go along with my Linux laptop.

Pretty excited.

I am a fan of Mac, and from what I hear Apple is working on a PPC/Intel Co-Processor for higher end Mac Pro system so PPC programs can be run under emulation, but as if it were running natively inside the OS. Thus everything is Universal.

Apple and Linux are innovative, and Microsoft needs that innovativeness to steal, copy, and place on the opposite end of the screen.

So as you see, I'm a Mac fan and a Linux fan, but I am not a fan of profiteering copycats.

I have not used a Mac in some time. I am very used to Windows, but I hate the problem of spyware on Windows. So my next computer purchase will probably be a mac. Since I hear that it is not so much of a problem on Mac.

Apple have always been far too expensive. They always look nice and are well built. Seeing as they are now just PC's in a shinny suit why are they so damned expensive? Also why are they so much more expensive here in the UK? The $ is worth jack at the moment, around 50p It makes me think that there is some profiteering going on there.

Well I run my bussiness with a quite a few PCs, and only one of them uses windows!

I own a MacBook Pro 17" with a 200GB Hard Drive that i use as my main computer. I boot OS X, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Solaris, and Fedora.

My Other main PC, a HP Pavilion has Windows XP HE and Ubuntu on it.

My few side PCs are both Dells, and one is old and one is fairly new.
Both only run Ubuntu.

I have to say that Getting them all to network in a friendly manner has been a big hassle...one of the drawbacks of mixing OSs. Mostly Linux was at fault, ESPECIALLY ubuntu and samba. They gave me the biggest problems and still do.

Supisingly Windows networked quite nicely with other Windows machines that came to and fro, and connected to my Linux and OS X quite nicely as well...

Sadly one of the most drawbacks that kept me from ditching windows completly was program compatibility.

Linux and OS X have WINE, but having wine on OSX kills the system and destroys itself, so i didnt even bother. Wine with Ubuntu was a hassle too, i never got it to work. i ended up reinstalling ubuntu everytime i tried to.

But anyway, I still love OS X overall anything else. Ubuntu linux followed by other linux systems follow...

I can honestly say after I switched to Macintoshes in early 2002, i cannot go on without one.

I support Linux as well. Windows is now a bad dream of the past I have just forgotten, it only remains in my laptop in a tiny partition because of the support it gives to my webcam and SD reader (damn Microsucks exclusivity agreements).

I tried MacOSX at school and it looks nice but, unless I get a MAC (preferrably a laptop) I don't see the point of using it in my PC when I can use Linux or BSD for that matter. Besides MacOSX is not as permissive as Linux or BSD are.

I am typing this on my Mac. My main machine is a first generation Macbook. (2.0Ghz Core Duo, 1GB of RAM.)

I have it hooked to a 20" wide screen Dell LCD, and have an apple keyboard hooked up. I use a Logitech MX700 for the mouse.

I use it in clamshell mode, so the actual LCD on the laptop is only used for portable computing. I leave the computer open after engaging clamshell mode so that the screen is not heated constantly.

I know I could have just gotten a 20 inch iMac, but this is cheaper and I can take it with me. I like having my data be portable.

I get a lot of work done in OSX. Spotlight is a perfect search tool. Safari is the only browser that I have ever not hated.

Quartz is perfect desktop acceleration. It isn't gaudy. It is fast, pretty, and actually adds functionality.

iTunes is wonderful, in OSX. I can't imagine another concept for dealing with a music library surpassing iTunes.

Adium is the best IM client ever. Nothing comes close to matching it. It looks better, works better, and is more extensible than anything else out there.

Quicksilver is application launching that makes sense.

Mail, Toast, Handbrake, Cyberduck, Pages, Keynote... the list of OSX exclusive applications that have no real counterpart (in my opinion) goes on and on!

I love my Mac.

I also love my Linux box. It gets its job done as well.

I got a first-gen Macbook last fall, and have enjoyed it ever since. I like OSX unobtrustive Aqua interface, and it feels good having a BSD system just a click away. Eventually, however, I missed the OSS world and associated culture -- and got tired of being treated by an idiot by the occasional limiting dialog (ex. you can't enable personal web sharing with the GUI tools to test a PHP script locally without opening the firewall to the outside). Fink/Darwinports is okay, but nothing compares to a *real* OSS repository (Debian/Ubuntu). I not primarily use Ubuntu on it.

Now for the OT monopoly-bashing:

Agreed. I thought the "Microsoft isn't innovative" thing was just hyperbolic flame, until I mentioned MSH (Precursor to PowerShell) in a blog pointing out all the things Vista seemed to be copying from OSS. To my surprise, the M$ architect of MSH left a comment saying:

Quote:
> Microsoft has been a contributor to technology, but not a leader.

Not that it matters much one way or the other but do you perceive that Windows PowerShell is not providing any leadership in the CLI space? It is certainly true that we are standing on the shoulders of giants and I go out of my way to give credit to the UNIX/VMS/AS400 superstars that came before us. That said, I think we are moving the ball forward in a pretty substantial way.

> Then they’ll unveal that MSH (PowerShell) was designed to fit neatly into any POSIX system. [[I said this in jest]]

That is truer than you can imagine. By in large, PowerShell depends only on the .NET framework (there are a couple exceptions were we use WINDOWS security APIs).

I used my sister's Power Mac G5 yesterday and then I realized how much I have customized my Linux environment to my likes. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience to use Mac OS X.

I have been considering lately about buying a Mac, but they cost a bomb (apparently here in the UK they cost more than other places)

I dont know if it is worth investing nearly a grand for a Mac with similar specs to my PC when I can just use Linux

I will have a MacBook in less than 2 weeks. It will be my 2nd laptop other than my Ubuntu laptop, which is my main machine right now. My windows/ubuntu desktop in my basement is never touched anymore other than to use Photoshop (which mac will take care of for me =])

good arguments, but still you have to look at the quality and what your getting for your money. I think the 2.5 Grand ive paid for mine was well worth it.
