Default Is Marketing/Sociology a good field to get into?

I'm a huge marketing, and design enthusiast. Nothing gets my mental juices flowing like taking human data and turning that data into something that people want. But, is this a good field of study to get into as a business?

What do you all think? I'm heavily looking into majoring in sociology with a minor in marketing. Maybe a dual major if I can afford it.

If it is something you are passionate about and willing to pursue it is.

I've always been pretty passionate about it, even at ages under 10 I was learning the basics of marketing to people, socializing, etc. I've taken every business class the local community college will offer me, as well.

From ages 12-15 I was HUGE into photoshop and art forums, along with video games. I spent a LOT of my time working on forums re-arranging them to be more usable/easy-to-navigate, creating custom 'signature graphics' to-order, taking polls, etc.

I would say by this point it's been ingrained in my being. Haha.

I agree with Rasczak - if it's interesting, then yes, it's a good field. I wonder though why you are talking about majoring in sociology and minoring in marketing - it sounds as though you are more interested in the design/marketing side of things. From what I've seen at my school, a lot of kids end up in sociology because it seems like an easy major and they don't know what they want to do but someone told them to go to university, so you might end up being frustrated with sociology classes.

Well, I thought about it and Sociology appears to be the science behind marketing. Although I would absolutely dual-major in both if I can afford it, I think the sociology degree might open up my job prospects a bit more, over the marketing degree. While both would be incredibly useful for me to get a marketing/design job.

Any kind of a business degree is more marketable, than a "soft" degree such as History, English, Philosophy or Sociology.

What you learn in a real business environment soon obsoletes what you learned in a classroom environment, but the degree major can, and will affect the interview and new hire process.

My suggestion to you would be a major in Marketing or Management, with a minor in anything else that interests you.

I think you are doing a good thing, by exposing yourself to an area related to your business degree. This will give you insight and an edge in the market when you start hunting for a job. Good thinking and keep at it!

Ok, so maybe I'll just reverse the two and get Marketing as my major and sociology as a minor.
