Don't worry about me. You started a thread promising to tell everyone how to buy cars. So tell me the right way. Tell me what you would have done differently.

Supporting your own claims isn't coddling anyone, supporting your claims is called intellectual honesty and knowing what you are talking about. All I'm asking is for you to back up what you said.

When someone buying a car wants my advice, I will give it if I choose. Your life should not hinge on my opinion. Learn to let things go, rasczak, it will prolong your life and probably make your homelife happier.

Has anyone here bought cars online? I only know one guy who's done this, and he seemed happy with the car. He said it was cheaper... since it cut out some dealership overhead. I wasn't sure though the general level of satisfaction doing this, or if others have had horror stories ...

Do you mean buying online sight unseen? I bought my car through kijiji, and I'm very happy with it. I did go and look at it first though - buying a car without even a test drive just doesn't seem like a good idea.

If it was a new car, why not? The warrantee is from the manufacturer, not the dealer.

Usually, however, new cars have to be sold by licensed dealers, and licenses are only normally issued to dealers with a showroom and parking facilities. It is a pretty rigorous process getting a dealership license.

OTOH, used cars are a more difficult subject. No matter what you do, unless you have it checked out throughly by a service person you can trust, your taking a chance, and even then, there are no guarantees. I've been both lucky and unlucky, but lucky more often as I've spent many years in the automotive service and sales industry. Besides, I have spent many many hours on my back underneath family autos.

I don't know why you continue to think you can run me off by saying things like "coddle" and "my feelings are hurt" and "my life hinges on your opinion." That kind of stuff is immediately recognizable as blowing smoke to pretty much anyone here.

I ALWAYS recommend to take the car down to a trustworthy mechanic. If there's something your worried about, and its the only thing that's preventing you buying the car,go right ahead. It will be your dollar not mine. If there is something wrong with the vehicle then there is room to work with on the price. The dealership that i don't work for doesn't focus on making tons of money off of one car but focuses on making little money off of 60-80 cars a month between 3 dealers and 45 vehicle inventory.

As per getting the FINANCE price before you do any paperwork is difficult just because if you have horrible credit (and that's where we do most of our business) majority of the time the bank will charge us(meaning the dealership) a fee just to finance, that will then inflate the price of the car to include the fee. Besides the fact we might have a listed price but that doesn't mean anything. We had a 95 blazer with really low mileage but fully loaded, power everything and leather, we had it listed at $7999 the guy ended up with $5200 OTD. Now you cant tell me that was a hell of a nice deal and a damn nice discount.

I can say that there was something you did wrong. It doesn't matter if you come in 5 minutes til they close no matter what you are making them money. Coming from a Used car salesman i don't care if you are coming in as i am flipping the sign saying that we were closed if your serious about buying a car and are going to be buying one ill stay cause your making me money.
