I don't know about the US, but you need a decent antenna to get decent reception on HD channels here in Australia (High Definition digital TV services are running already here, with more coming soon). Rabbit ears don't really cut it, unless you're lucky enough to be in very close range of a transmission. If you can get excellent reception through the rabbit ears now, I would think you will continue to get excellent reception of the HD channel.
