canons are good, though I'm not sure if the're well supported by linux.
My Hp Deskjet D1455 was recognised by mint though, it's about 80 dollars.
I only had to enable it through the printing tab in my administration menu. not sure about the price of ink though.

Note. Whatever you do, don't buy a lexmark. The ink is over $50 (it's something like $64)
