The middle east is just culturally behind much of the world (debate that statement all you want, but you wont convince me its just 'different')
the fact that their muslim is a side point, everything they justify with the koran can just as easily be justified by the bible, if the middle east was predominantly christian it wouldnt change their local culture very much. religions are made up by people and used to whatever ends they want.
