True stories like that happen all the time. Usually, they aren't very popular.

What I took away from it was Gardner was always trying. Always. He got himself into that crappy sales business, but he didn't give up, he sold every last one of the damn things, and when he hit obstacles, like getting one of the units stolen, he worked at fixing them. He didn't just sit down and say "I'm screwed."

He never accepted bad luck or bad circumstances, he worked at changing them. He looked around him, saw what he wanted, and went after it, no matter what it took. He wound up requiring a safety net and accepted charity, but he didn't decide to live in the safety net, he got himself out of it quickly. Now he's a rich man. His success is providing a living and wealth for other people.

I heard the real Gardner interviewed. He's a great guy - happy, successful, opitimistic, and now he's a very productive person making a huge contribution to society.
