A friend of my mothers did that with her television... after buying a new TV, she replaced the potplant with a plastic one... and then forgot it was fake and watered it, frying the new TV as well.
I haven't done anything very technical - I did upgrade to the latest version of Kubuntu without checking the dialup support, and then had to downgrade again when I couldn't get it going, leaving me with over 400mb of updates to do
