Most people don't despise it, or else there wouldn't be Compiz Fusion or art.gnome.org. Therefore this argument really only applies to a minority (AFAIK).

Well, then, what is Compiz Fusion doing? If you like the eye candy, you won't mind the intensity, as long as it doesn't interfere with your frames per second.
