I'm an atheist, and I was never religious. My parents simply let me decide for myself; they never mentioned any "god" until I asked them about it. I asked if there is such a thing as a "god", and my father simply said "Some people believe there is, and some don't.".
Though for many years, I never called myself an atheist, simply because I didn't want to come off sounding like someone who wouldn't believe in a god if one suddenly showed itself. I guess I was a casualty of some religious propaganda in that way.
